It's 1966 on Clark Air Base (CAB) in the Philippine Islands, where wedding rings languish in underwear drawers, the Viet Nam war rages less than an hour away, and black flies feed on a body in the teachers' BOQ housing. Teachers usually die of old age, but on CAB death is accelerated by forces the Department of Defense never factored in when, every August, they delivered thousands of young civilian women to teach on American military bases from Goose Bay, Labrador, to Luzon, Philippines. Out of those thousands, seven single women find that, as forewarned by a drunken colonel, living on an airbase in Southeast Asia is equivalent to "dancing on a serpent."

Signature Dishes of America

America’s chefs and cooks have reveled in serving meals to their customers since this country’s early beginnings, creating their own recipes based on available ingredients, creativity, or at the request of others. Some took humble home recipes and made them into their signature specialties, many of which have become synonymous with certain hotels and restaurants in America. These culinary treasures are household names, but their true origin has slipped back into history. Signature Dishes of America captures nearly 100 of these well-known dishes and their origins. Foods like Eggs Benedict, Green Goddess Dressing, and Hot Browns were created decades ago and remain mainstays in our culinary world today. Discover the story behind Los Angeles’ Brown Derby’s Cobb Salad, whose recipe was created by a hungry owner, or how an old pie recipe discovered in an antique drawer became a favorite at the Golden Lamb restaurant. This collection of recipes and their background is a tasty way to share American food history and culture.

Season in Hell

Professional football was officially suspended at the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939. With their contracts terminated, players were free to join the Armed Forces and, by April 1940, 514 were enlisted in the Army, 84 in the RAF and 31 in the Royal Navy. Many others were involved in war work; one factory in Oldbury boasted 18 West Bromwich Albion players. Of those who joined up 80 were to die. These included English International Tom Cooper who had played for Liverpool, Derby County and Port Vale, Alan Fowler of Swindon Town who died after D Day serving with the Dorsets, and Herbie Robert of Arsenal. Many were household names as Gareth Bale and Wayne Rooney are today. In this powerful and evocative memorial book the author traces the footballing and military careers of these talented men who sacrificed all for King and Country.

Cardozo

Benjamin Nathan Cardozo, unarguably one of the most outstanding judges of the twentieth century, is a man whose name remains prominent and whose contributions to the law remain relevant. This first complete biography of the longtime member and chief judge of the New York Court of Appeals and Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States during the turbulent years of the New Deal is a monumental achievement by a distinguished interpreter of constitutional law. Cardozo was a progressive judge who understood and defended the proposition that judge-made law must be adapted to modern conditions. He also preached and practiced the doctrine that respect for precedent, history, and all branches ...
