Dorothy Hansine Andersen

This book chronicles the life and accomplishments of Dorothy Hansine Andersen, a pioneering American pathologist and pediatrician who was the first person to define, diagnose, and treat cystic fibrosis. Divided into three parts, the book begins by detailing Anderson’s early life, including being orphaned as an adolescent, her college career, and her laborious start in the medical field. Part II then examines Andersen’s role in defining the new disease “cystic fibrosis of the pancreas” and her career of active engagement in various clinical pursuits and research, both in pathology and pediatrics. Chapters in this section also discuss the numerous attempts made by others to minimize Andersen’s work through gender bias and the Matilda Effect. The book concludes by reviewing the foundations laid for CF, Andersen’s legacy, and her terminal illness. Featuring an engaging narrative style, Dorothy Hansine Andersen is a historically relevant, invaluable text for anyone interested in the life of Dorothy Anderson and the nascence of cystic fibrosis diagnoses.

I enjoy writing poems and lyrics reflecting my views of society. I like to write what I call unification pieces. We, as a society are basing our relationships on our political ideals over personal friendships. The theatrics of politicians and activists are driving wedges into our society further isolating social groups. We as a society, may never be on the same page but we can at least be in the same chapter. Right now, we are not in the same book. Hopefully we can come I am a 72 year old Navy veteran of the Vietnam war. Overcoming several health challenges (High Blood Pressure, Parkinson's and kidney decease), I have had a pretty rewarding professional career in industry and owning my own business. My wife of 46 years, Dorothy and I have raise four children and worked side by side in a successful business. We have three handsome young grandsons. I love writing poems and lyrics and playing my guitar. Dorothy loves to paint landscapes and still life in acrylics and other mediums. "There Was A Lane" features some of our works the last 46 years. We hope you enjoy it. Larry & Dorothy Anderson

Portraits in Cataloging and Classification

Co-published simultaneously as Cataloging and Classification Quarterly, v.25, nos.2/3 and 4, 1998. With a President who has stated that the Internet represents the way to learn in the next century, what is the future of librarians and the library sciences? This volume, an amalgam of biography, autobiography, and history, answers that question by looking to the past and examining the lives and achievements of pioneers in cataloguing and research.
