Democratic Reform in Africa
This work examines the interrelationship between governance and poverty alleviation in Africa and the impact of democratic reform on this relationship. There has been a new approach to the question of governance in Africa on the part of the international community. Economic aid and other forms of financial assistance are conditional on good governance. African states themselves in the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) have recognized good governance as a precondition to development. They have devised standards for economic and political governance. Democratic reform in Africa has been slow, difficult and at times painful. Nevertheless, sufficient time has passed to begin to assess what progress, if any, Africa has made in addressing the need for the consolidation of democratic reform and the resolution of considerable developmental challenges. The Triumph of Citizenship
Patricia E. Roy is the winner of the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award, Canadian Historical Association. Patricia E. Roy examines the climax of antipathy to Asians in Canada: the removal of all Japanese Canadians from the BC coast in 1942. Canada ignored the rights of Japanese Canadians and placed strict limits on Chinese immigration. In response, Japanese Canadians and their supporters in the human rights movement managed to halt "repatriation" to Japan, and Chinese Canadians successfully lobbied for the same rights as other Canadians to sponsor immigrants. The final triumph of citizenship came in 1967, when immigration regulations were overhauled and the last remnants of discrimination removed.
Canada between Vichy and Free France, 1940-1945
The relationship between Canada and France has always been complicated by the Canadian federal government's relations with Quebec. In this first study of Franco-Canadian relations during the Second World War, Olivier Courteaux demonstrates how Canada's wartime foreign policy was shaped by the country's internal divides. As Courteaux shows, Quebec's vocal nationalist minority came to openly support France's fascist Vichy regime and resented Canada's involvement in a 'British' war, while English Canada was largely sympathetic to de Gaulle's Free French movement and accepted its duty to aid embattled Mother Britain. Meanwhile, on the world stage, Canada deftly juggled ties with both French factions to appease Great Britain and the United States before eventually giving full support to the Free French movement. Courteaux concludes this extensively detailed study by illustrating Canada's vital role in helping France reassert its position on the global stage after 1944. India, Nigeria, and the Congo Crisis, 1960-65
After the great devastation of the Second World War, 51 world leaders established an international organization for the purpose of maintaining peace and security in the world by preventing escalation of conflicts, promoting mutual cooperation, and developing friendly relations among them, called the United Nations (UN). Despite its noble aims and objectives, the UN could not maintain total global peace, because many sporadic individual skirmishes still took place among nations. One such conflict began in the Congo during 1960s, which later escalated into an international crisis and made the Big Powers take sides for a major showdown. At this juncture, to save the international organization, the Non-Aligned countries, under the leadership of India and Nigeria, came to the fore to support the UN in its efforts for peace-keeping in the Congo and preventing the Super Powers from getting involved in this conflict. All these details, events of the crisis, and the role of the Non-Aligned nations towards its diffusion are discussed in this book.
