Anticolonial Form

Raza examines key literary journals published in French, English, and Portuguese by African writers in Europe in the period of decolonization mainly between 1940 and 1970, to understand how writers understood Empire as a political and cultural structure, and what conceptions of freedom, culture, and society underpinned anti-colonial thinking.

Transatlantic Radio Dramas

The BBC Latin American Service was created in 1938, funded by the British Ministry of Information, to counter fascist propaganda broadcast to Latin America. Now considered one of the major Latin American novelists of the twentieth century, Brazilian writer Antônio Callado (1917–1997) got his start writing radio drama scripts for the BBC LAS during and after World War II. Largely forgotten until Daniel Mandur Thomaz collected them in a 2018 volume published in Brazil, these radio scripts were propaganda in their own right and were part of a concerted effort to win sympathy for Britain and the Allies in Latin America. They reveal how Callado’s experiences during the war influenced his writing and had a critical impact on themes he would revisit consistently throughout his literary career. Transatlantic Radio Dramas analyzesthe scripts themselves, but also examines the institutions, material practices, and beliefs that allowed modernist transatlantic networks like the BBC LAS to flourish.

Anticolonial Form

Anticolonial Form: Literary Journals at the End of Empire addresses the relationship between culture and politics in two journals published in Europe by African writers: Présence Africaine, launched in Paris in 1947, and Mensagem, published between 1948 and 1964 in Lisbon. Grounded in extensive archival work, the book argues for a comparative and transnational approach to postcolonial literary studies, for the significance of the literary journal as a key form in the development of African writing in French, Portuguese, and English, and for a historically and geographically contingent understanding of the relationships between literature, culture, and politics. This book takes up the idea o...

The Dispensable Nation

Former State Department adviser for Afghanistan and Pakistan Vali Nasr delivers a sharp indictment of AmericaÕs flawed foreign policy, and outlines a new relationship with the Muslim world and with new players in the changing Middle East. In this essential new book, Vali Nasr argues that the Obama administration had a chance to improve its relations with the Middle East, but instead chose to pursue its predecessorÕs questionable strategies there. Nasr takes readers behind the scenes at the State Department and reveals how the new governmentÕs fear of political backlash and the spectre of terrorism crippled the efforts of diplomatic giants, like Richard Holbrooke and Hillary Clinton, to bo...
