Women, Gender, Remittances and Development in the Global South

Developing the conceptualisation of the relationship between transnational remittance exchanges and gender, this book provides a number of case studies of relationships between gender and remittances from around the world, highlighting different processes and practises. This book provides conceptual insights to better understand how remittances affect gender identity, roles and relations (at both the receiving and sending end) and give specific attention to the roles of various actors directly and indirectly involved in remittance sending in current collectively organized remittance schemes from around the world. This adds a wealth of insights to a field that is remarkably understudied despite a volume of studies on gender and the feminization of migration in developing contexts.

Mobility and Migration Choices

The crossing of national state borders is one of the most-discussed issues of contemporary times and it poses many challenges for individual and collective identities. This book examines the three constitutive parts discerned in the cross-border mobility decision-making process: people, borders and trajectories and their interrelationships. Illustrated by a global range of case studies, it demonstrates that the relation between the three is not fixed but flexible and that decision-making contains aspects of belonging, instability, security and volatility affecting their mobility or immobility.

This book deals with one of the main environmental challenges in Indonesia, namely the processing of solid waste. As a case, the study focuses on household waste management in the city of Semarang in Central Java. Semarang still uses the end of pipe system. Waste is brought to temporary disposal sites (TDSs) and from there to a final disposal site (FDS). The poor urban waste management evidently does not only result in a negative impact on human life and the environment but also constitutes a geographical problem. This is because the negative impact of disposal sites will affect those living in the immediate vicinity. The extent of the burden or benefit, of the sites, will vary according to the site location. Further to this, within a specific population group, households will be unequally exposed to some burdens depending on their proximity to the disposal site, gender (women will usually suffer more), age and social group. Frequently poor people are the most vulnerable party who will receive the burden of the disposal site rather than its benefit.

Examines what it means to be African and American through the stories of recent West African immigrants African & American tells the story of the much overlooked experience of first and second generation West African immigrants and refugees in the United States during the last forty years. Interrogating the complex role of post-colonialism in the recent history of black America, Marilyn Halter and Violet Showers Johnson highlight the intricate patterns of emigrant work and family adaptation, the evolving global ties with Africa and Europe, and the translocal connections among the West African enclaves in the United States.
