Smoking decrease blood supply to nerve. Smoking also induces subclinical changes in myelin sheath leading to demyelination of nerves and consequent decrease in conduction velocity. The demylinated axon has poor electrotonic conduction. Nerve conduction study is a part of electrodiagnostic procedures that helps in establishing the type and extent of the abnormality of the nerves.
