Sagalassos I

Sagalassos, once the metropolis of the Western Taurus range (Pisidia, Turkey), was only thoroughly surveyed in 1884 and 1885 by an Austrian team directed by K. Lanckoronski. In 1986-1989 this work was resumed by a British-Belgian team co-directed by Dr. Stephen Mitchell (University College of Swansea) and by Prof. Dr. Marc Waelkens (Catholic University of Leuven). In 1990 Sagalassos became a full scale Belgian project and a leading center for interdisciplinary archaeological and archaeometrical research. Due to its altitude, the site is one of the best preserved towns from classical antiquity, with a rich architectural and sculptural tradition dating from the second century BC to the sixth c...

Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery

Recognized clinical leaders in neurosurgery and neuroradiology review the cutting-edge techniques and technologies now available and describe how minimally invasive techniques have influenced their subspecialties. On the radiology side, the authors explain the latest developments in magnetic resonance spectroscopy, functional imaging, and brain mapping, with emphasis on the application of image navigation directly in the operating room, using both preoperative and intraoperative systems. On the surgical side, some of the world's leading surgeons in pediatric neurosurgery, cerebrovascular surgery, neurosurgical oncology, spinal and peripheral nerve surgery, and trauma surgery detail how they use the powerful new minimally invasive techniques in the own practices. Among the novel approaches discussed are radiofrequency, radiosurgery, thermal therapy, and minimally invasive techniques that allow "molecular neurosurgery" via gene and viral vectors and local delivery systems.

This study presents a new approach to the phenomenon of Muslim pious foundations, or "waqfs," focussing on the evolution of the institution in the urban context and the elaboration of the legal framework to accommodate the urban system of control. Taking Damascus as an example, it is shown how the waqf-institution determined the shape and character of Muslim cities.

The Foundations of Scientific Inference

Not since Ernest Nagel’s 1939 monograph on the theory of probability has there been a comprehensive elementary survey of the philosophical problems of probablity and induction. This is an authoritative and up-to-date treatment of the subject, and yet it is relatively brief and nontechnical. Hume’s skeptical arguments regarding the justification of induction are taken as a point of departure, and a variety of traditional and contemporary ways of dealing with this problem are considered. The author then sets forth his own criteria of adequacy for interpretations of probability. Utilizing these criteria he analyzes contemporary theories of probability, as well as the older classical and subjective interpretations.

Fezzes in the River

Self-determination, imported into the Middle East on the heels of World War I, held out the promise of democratic governance to the former territories of the Ottoman Empire. The new states that European Great Powers carved out of the multilingual, multiethnic, and multireligious empire were expected to adhere to new forms of affiliation that emphasized previously unimportant differences. In 1936, the new Republic of Turkey lay claim to Antioch and the Sanjak (province) of Alexandretta, which the French had ruled since 1920 as part of its mandate over Syria. Turkey's ambassador made a passionate argument that Alexandretta was a homeland of the Turks, a place that was essentially Turkish. With...

Taxation of Crypto Assets

  • Categories: Law

The emergence of crypto assets has required taxation authorities worldwide to develop unprecedented policies and compelled tax lawyers to apply existing laws in new ways.
