India is now governed by a strong Modi-led majority party. A peaceful transference of power in terms of parties and structure as a consequence of India’s 16th national election highlights a notable degree of political maturity. The replacement of the Congress-led coalition after 10 years with a Bharatiya Janata Party clear majority is one obvious result of what can be considered a historic election. As a consequence of the 2014 elections, the emergence of a strong leader and a strong party coupled with continuing regionalism may provide a version of the state-nation system. It remains to be seen to what extent the new political structure coupled with India’s diversity will shape society, politics and governance during the next five years. Jobymon Skaria, an Indian St Thomas Christian Scholar, offers a critique of Indian Christian theology and suggests that constructive dialogues between Biblical and dissenting Dalit voices – such as Chokhamela, Karmamela, Ravidas, Kabir, Nandanar and Narayana Guru – could set right the imbalance within Dalit theology, and could establish dialogical partnerships between Dalit Theologians, non-Dalit Christians and Syrian Christians. This book examines certain changes in the political make-up of Karnataka, between the early 1970s and the late 1980s, which, in turn, led to the birth of a unique democracy in the state. In a departure from most studies on political science and political history which pay little or no attention to the role of politicians and focus only on technocratic blueprints, administrative processes and incentive systems, this volume takes into account the role politicians play in shaping the character of their governments, public policy and state–society relations. It studies the political transformation of Karnataka by focusing heavily on three chief ministers of the state who played an important role in making politics in Karnataka more accommodative, enlightened and, hence, more democratic. This volume is a detailed insider’s account of the political processes in Karnataka, enriched with interviews and surveys which seek to locate this work in the social science literature, in Karnataka’s recent history and in comparative context alongside other Indian states.

"In these two volumes, scholars of political science, sociology, and history adopt a common set of concepts to analyse patterns of change in the ideological and structural foundations of dominance in India from the colonial period to the mid-1980s. Departing from modernist theories, these scholars set out an interactional framework of society-state relations where caste, class, ethnicity, and dominance are treated as structures and processes, interacting with each other and with increasingly powerful state institutions.
