Ungkapan nan Empat disampaikan ketika melaksanakan upacara menegakkan penghulu adat, khotbah Jumat, pidato persembahan pada acara meminang/menerima pinangan, menyelesaikan perselisihan antar anggota masyarakat, dan di setiap kesempatan lain, sebagaimana yang dilakukan masyarakat Minang Kabau pada umumnya. Kini zaman telah berubah; banyak anak-kemenakan serta keturunannya yang tidak lagi lahir, dibesarkan atau bekerja sebagai petani di nagari asalnya. Mereka lahir, dibesarkan dan bekerja di berbagai pelosok negeri dengan bermacam bidang profesi. Lebih dari itu semua kini mereka telah terbiasa pula membaca buku-buku yang ditulis dengan huruf latin. Mereka sudah menjadi manusia Indonesia seperti di daerah lainnya, tapi masih disebut sebagai orang Minang Kabau. Padahal nan empat adalah dialektika, logika, sistematika berpikir, bersikap dan berbuat menghadapi kehidupan di dunia warisan nenek moyang. Oleh sebab itu, penulis sebagai cucu keturunan Angku Ampek nagari Tanjung Sungayang berkeinginan meneruskan dan menyebarluaskan nan empat kepada anak - kemenakan khususnya, serta masyarakat pada umumnya melalui buku dan situs komunitas www.nagari.or.id.
