Dropout of Girl-child in Schools

This book is a maiden publication based on research work in the field of women education. It has implications reaching far beyond the city of Bareilly (U.P.) - the area of field investigation. A genuine attempt has been made to explore the diverse historical, demographical, socio-psychological, educational as well as economic dimensions of women education. Very simple, everyday, down-to-earth happenings have been cited which will propel the readers and leaders to a higher level of both purpose and commitment towards enhancing women education. A vivid description through ample illustrations like maps, graphs, tables and photographs has been made. A detailed Bibliography and Questionnaire woul...

Framing Dropouts

"I think this is the most important work I have read in over a decade on the sociology and politics of school dropouts. Fine combines a narrative structure with a rigorous theoretical discourse that allows the reader to both hear the voices of those involved in the dropout situation as well as to have the opportunity to reflect critically on the ideological and material forces that structure the dropout issue as a social problem. I am convinced that it will be a major influence in the field and will establish a new theoretical standard for inquiry into the area of school dropouts." -- Henry A. Giroux, Professor and Renown Scholar in Residence, Department of Educational Leadership, Miami U...

Abstract: The objective of this study is to describe, using national survey data, how many dropouts attempt to change the course of their lives by returning to complete their diploma requirements, what kinds of dropouts return and complete their requirements, and how the subsequent activities of those dropouts who returned to complete the diploma requirements differ from those of dropouts who remained out of school. This paper reports new findings from a recent follow-up survey of high school sophomores which indicate that a substantial proportion of high school dropouts return to complete their diploma requirements.

The authors examine the major groups within the dropout population, the myriad of factors within schools that lead to dropping out, and the larger social and economic context within which dropping out occurs. The resulting synthesis of knowledge and perspectives provided here will enhance our understanding of an important topic that has, to this time, been given too little attention.

Understanding Dropouts

The role played by testing in the nation's public school system has been increasing steadily-and growing more complicated-for more than 20 years. The Committee on Educational Excellence and Testing Equity (CEETE) was formed to monitor the effects of education reform, particularly testing, on students at risk for academic failure because of poverty, lack of proficiency in English, disability, or membership in population subgroups that have been educationally disadvantaged. The committee recognizes the important potential benefits of standards-based reforms and of test results in revealing the impact of reform efforts on these students. The committee also recognizes the valuable role graduatio...

The Dropout: Causes and Cures

This book allows the dropout to speak for himself. His views are compared with those of a high-school graduate having the same I.Q. and similar social and economic background. The reader is shown how these young people feel about their families, friends, and teachers, providing insight into many of their basic emotions and attitudes.

The Dropouts: A Tale of Growing Up in East Texas

When their parents are killed, Nick and Nita find themselves destitute. Only an uncle they've never known offers them a refuge on his East Texas farm. The culture shock is intense for Nita, but Nick takes to farming, learning how to plow with a mule, bale hale, milk cows, and tend gardens. "Mayhar's roots in East Texas are never more evident than in this lovely tale of teenagers forced to re-evaluate their lives. Poignant and moving."--Robert Reginald.
