This rich interpretation of Homer's "Odyssey" is unique among modern readings of the poem in its detailed book-by-book approach and in its deeply humanistic voice. According to George E. Dimock, what gives the "Odyssey" its unity is Homer's overarching theme of the meaning of pain and suffering in human life. In Dimock's reading, Homer presents Odysseus -- whose name translates as "Man of Pain" as the greatest sufferer of pain and evil. But it is precisely because Odysseus accepts this challenge that he eventually wins a happiness which would have been unattainable without such testing. His suffering is not only crucial to his coming home and the establishment of his identity, but also allows him to experience what home and self mean with an intensity that would have been otherwise impossible. -- From publisher's description.

The Genealogy of LeBaron Dimock and the Memoirs of Georgie Luella Dimock

The Dimock (Dymoke) family was an important contributor to the history of England, United States and Canada. The Dymokes of England are best known for their association since 1377 with the title of King's Champion by virtue of which they held the manor of Scrivelsby, in Lincolnshire, England. Our line is believed to have been connected to Sir Edward Dymocke (ca. 1555-1634) of Scrivelsby, Lincolnshire. Following religious persecution in England, Elder Thomas Dimmock (1604-1658), was the first Dimmock to settle in New England on American soil in 1635 in the Cape Cod, Massachusetts area. Then still experiencing religious persecution, the Dimmock family, led by Rev Shubael Dimock III (1708-1781)...

Iphigeneia at Aulis

In their translation of Euripides' Iphigeneia at Aulis, noted American poet W.S. Merwin and eminent classicist George E. Dimock offer a compelling look at the devastating consequence of "man's inhumanity to man." A stern critique of Greek culture, Iphigeneia at Aulis condemns the Trojan War, depicting the ugly and awesome power of political ambition. Agamemnon's sacrifice of his daughter Iphigeneia to facilitate the Greek Armies advance on Troy is marvelously conveyed by Merwin, as he impressively recreates the broad array of moral and emotional tones with which Euripides has invested one of the most moving plays in the history of drama. With its insightful introduction by Dimock, notes on the text, and a glossary of mythical and geographical terms, this edition of Iphigeneia at Aulis is indispensable to an understanding of Euripides' tragic vision.
