The battle for independence affected, and was affected by, such issues as Romania's quest for progress, its internal civil rights, and its relations with other Balkan nationalities. In tracing the complicated interaction of these elements, Frederick Kellogg explores the development of Romanian railroads and trade, Romanian anti-Semitism, Balkan nationalism, and Bulgarian revolutionary currents.
In 1948 Paul Karrer and Ernst Jucker compiled the first comprehensive book on the topic of carotenoids. Their work included a list of 65 natural carotenoids with known and unknown structures. In Otto Isler's 'Carotenoids' which appeared in 1971, Otto Straub published a new and expanded 'List of Natural Carotenoids' comprised of 273 compounds and included all the literature data known at the time. This list proved to be of such value to those working in the field of carote noids that 5 years later Otto Straub came out with an up dated version ofthelist entitled 'Key to Carotenoids'. The present second edition of 'Key to Carotenoids' endeavors to provide the reader with the continuation of Straub's work. I would like to thank my collaborators for their work and especially Birkhäuser Verlag, Basle, for their support. H.P. In recent years, the increasing focus on climate change and environmental degradation has prompted unprecedented attention being paid towards the criminal liability of individuals, organisations and even states for polluting activities. These developments have given rise to a new area of criminological study, often called ‘green criminology’. Yet in all the theorising that has taken place in this area, there is still a marked absence of specific focus on those actually suffering harm as a result of environmental degradation. This book represents a unique attempt to substantively conceptualise and examine the place of such ‘environmental victims’ in criminal justice systems both natio...

This book provides the first comprehensive history of manufacturing in the Ottoman Empire and its Turkish successor state. As the Ottoman Empire evolved, manufacturing underwent an unusual trajectory. Expansion in the sixteenth century gave way to transformation and adaptation after the Industrial Revolution. Then, in the earlier part of the twentieth century, modern Turkey's attempt at state-led industrialization became a model for many developing countries. Suraiya Faroqhi, Mehmet Genc, Donald Quataert, and Caglar Keyder, experts on different phases of the manufacturing trajectory, provide here exceptional case studies of manufacturing activities in their social and political contexts, integrating first-hand research with surveys of the literature. This work offers rich material for historians, economists, and other social scientists, including those interested in the origins of underdevelopment and development in the contemporary world.
The Antarctic Treaty (1959) was adopted for the purpose of bringing peace and stability to the region and to facilitate cooperation in scientific research conducted on and around the continent. It has now been over fifty years since the Antarctic Treaty's entry into force, nevertheless, security continues to both drive and shape the legal and policy regime which applies to Antarctica. This book explores a wide range of Antarctic and Southern Ocean issues through the lens of security. The contributions to this volume engage with a security discourse which has expanded beyond the traditional military domain to include notions of economic security, environmental security, food security, bio-security, heath security and human security. The chapters consider topics such as the implications for Antarctica and the Southern Ocean of the growing strategic competition between the rising powers of Asia, the possible effects of climate change on the authority, legitimacy and effectiveness of the Antarctic Treaty System, and the shift from 'strategic' security to 'human' security and its potential consequences for the Antarctic treaty regime.

Foresight is an area within Futures Studies that focuses on critical thinking concerning long term developments, whether within the public sector or in industry and management, and is something of a sub-section of complexity and network science. This book examines developments in foresight methodologies and relates in its greater part to the work done in the context of the COSTA22 network of the EU on Foresight Methodologies. Foresight is a professional practice that supports significant decisions, and as such it needs to be more assured of its claims to knowledge (methodology). Foresight is practiced across many domains and is not the preserve of specialized ‘futurists’, or indeed of fo...
