Mannington or Mannington Hall in Norfolk County, England became a family residence of the Walpole family about 1736, when the Potts family (earlier owners) were ruined by the South Sea Bubble. The history and genealogy of the Walpole family in England goes back to before the Conquest. Sir Robert Walpole (d.1745) was made a peer as the 1st Earl of Orford. Horace Walpole (1717-1797), the English author, was the 4th Earl of Orford. Other family members were also active in national politics.
