Based on original research this book is a unique attempt at a general assessment of EU frontiers. Internal frontiers are losing some of their key functions but there are many responses to the new situation, as a case study of French frontiers abundantly illustrates. An examination of the EU external frontier shows that the EU is acquiring some state-like features, but the eastern frontier provides abundant evidence of the external frontier's complexity. The authors conclude that the increasing openness of national frontiers will continue, but their effective abolition, whether by European integration or through 'globalization', is improbable.

The Annals of the Holyrood Parish

Annals of the Holyrood Parish chronicles a Decade of Devolution in Scotland, from the 2003 'rainbow parliament' to the eve of the independence referendum. "An account that captures the pre-referendum mood, enlightening the distortion that hindsight will cause many of us to have, and thus is a most valuable addition to the debate.'" Lindsay Paterson On 18 September 2014, "the Scots" are to vote on their country's future. 'Should Scotland be an independent country?' is the question which will be put before them. Annals of the Holyrood Parish describes in ten chapters the 'Decade of Devolution' that has led up to this decisive moment, from the 'rainbow parliament' of 2003 which, a year later, moved into Enric Miralles' new parliament building at Holyrood, to the absolute majority of the Scottish National Party, covering elections, parliamentary bills, the ups and downs of parties and politicians, and what the Scottish people and the Scottish media have made of it all. A fascinating chronicle unfolds which charts the devolution journey so far, throws light on both campaigns - for and against independence - and sets the scene for 'Scotland's date with destiny'.

McSmörgåsbord

The Nordic countries have a veritable smörgåsbord of relationships with the European Union, from in to out to somewhere in between. So, what does that mean for Scotland? Well, somewhere in this incredible diversity of relationships with Europe is an arrangement that's likely to be good for Scotland too – strangely enough, maybe more than one. Inside or outside the UK, Scotland wants to keep trade and cultural links with Europe – that much is clear. But is the EU really the best club in town for an independent Scotland? Or would Scots benefit from 'doing a Norway' – joining the halfway house of the EEA and keeping the Single Market but losing the troublesome Common Fisheries and Agric...
