Ebrahim Hussein
Ebrahim Hussein is the best known Swahili playwright, and Tanzania's most complex literary personality. Known first and foremost as a dramatist, he is also a theorist whose dissertation on the theatre in Tanzania remains the standard reference work. His plays are a corpus of theatrical material with great significance to an understanding of Tanzania's political and social development in relation to the Swahili/Islamic coastal culture, of which he is a part. Alain Ricard is Research Professor of the CRNS of the African Studies Centre of the University of Bordeaux. In this sympathetic study of the man and the author, he corrects the neglect, by those writing in French and English, of the study of Tanzanian literature in general, and Hussein's work in particular.

Il écrit en swahili et a contribué à faire de cette langue une langue nationale. Cet ouvrage est le témoignage vivant des rencontres de l'auteur et de l'écrivain tanzanien qui a cessé de publier depuis dix ans. The novel thus touches on concerns of deeper relevance to the politics of race and migration of the twenty first century.
Drought characteristics and management in North Africa and the Near East
The report assesses the occurrence and impacts of drought, the current policies underlying drought management as well as the mitigation measures and responses adopted in the Near East and North Africa region, with a focus on the Agriculture Sector. It is the third of a series of similar studies carried out in different regions and countries of the world, with the objective of shedding light on drought effects, sensitizing policy-makers for the much needed paradigm shift to pro-active drought management planning and providing guidance for the development of such policies. The studies are carried out by FAO, in collaboration with the Water for Food Institute, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA, as a direct contribution to FAO's Strategic Objective "increasing the resilience of livelihoods to disasters" and Strategic Objective "make agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable".
