First Families Of Edgefield County, South Carolina Volume 2

This book provides family sketches and genealogical information on the first families to settle in Edgefield County, SC. The earliest settlers date back to the early 1700s. This area is particularly significant as the "end" of the Great Wagon Road from the New England States. Generally the area was not populated by white settlers until just prior to the Revolutionary War, but immediately following the war, thousands of people passed through as they pushed into Georgia, Alabama, and points west. By the time of the 1790 census, Edgefield county had families with 763 surnames listed. This volume focuses on the families which were apparently in the area as early as 1750. While most every county has a county history which was a life-long labor of love for someone and is generally of little interest beyond inhabitants of the county, Edgefield County, SC is unique for several reasons: 1. It was the end of the Great Wagon Road which stretched from New England all the way down the east coast. 2. Edgefield District once comprised much of the upstate of South Carolina. Augusta, GA at the navigable head of the Savannah River became the major trading post for the Indians and later the corridor for shipping products to market through Savannah. 3. Edgefield has played a key part in the politics of South Carolina and indeed for the entire country. From the earliest times before the Civil War, James Henry Hammond's "Cotton is King" set the narrative for much that followed leading up to Secession. Sen. Strom Thurmond dominated the political scene for most of the 20th Century. Edgefield County boasts 8 governors and 6 senators.

In My Father's House Are Many Mansions

Burton traces the evolution of Edgefield County from the antebellum period through Reconstruction and beyond. From amassed information on every household in this large rural community, he tests the many generalizations about southern black and white families of this period and finds that they were strikingly similar. Wealth, rather than race or class, was the main factor that influenced family structure, and the matriarchal family was but a myth.

These records are unique because the frontiersman, who settled in this geographical location (next to Indians lands), seldom had the opportunity to record his legal records until the end of the American Revolution when county courthouses were established. Therefore, many of the early deeds contain chains of titles from the original colonial land owner to the present owner at the time of the recording. They also contain many types of instructions, such as conveyances of land, marriage contracts, wills, sheriff's sales, deeds of gifts, plats or surveys (a facsimile of same is included in these abstracts), bills of sale, mortgages, affidavits, powers of attorney, slave sales and others. The deeds often reveal additional information, such as geographical locations, residence, adjoining neighbors, occupation, and heirships as widows, sons, daughters and their husbands, brothers, sisters, and uncles and sometimes the death date of the former property owner. An appendix section of South Carolina Colonial and State Land and Probate Laws is included to aid the student of genealogy and history.
