Ballads
Originally published in 1878, this quaint book is chockful of ballads from both England and Scotland. Many of them date back to the twelfth century, to the seventeenth century. They are stories of secret love, revenge plots, marauders and thieves, fairies and mermaids, and royal families.There are many familiar stories, such as Robin Hood and Maid Marian, Chevy Chase, Johnie Armstrong, and William Wallace. There are a great many ballads about King Arthur, and his knights of the round table. The book features the older versions of the ballads (in their original language), as well as modernised versions. They are stories written down, or passed orally so many years ago, and are still beautiful to read to this day.
