This is a Civil War book about a little known engagement that took place two days before the important Battle of Monocacy which is referred to as the battle that saved Washington, D.C. from capture by the Confederates. The book follows the ragtag Confederate Army of the Valley commanded by the cantankerous General Jubal Early on its ill fated 1864 invasion of Maryland. It introduces the reader to the various players and the general background that would become part of this critical thirty day period in the Civil War. David Trail was born sometime between 1678 and 1695 in Orkney, Scotland. His parents were William Trail and Barbara Balfour. He emigrated and settled in New Scotland Hundred, Prince George's County, Maryland. He married in about 1717 and had five children. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Maryland.
Guy White, 1st, arrived in Maryland in 1648 as an indentured servant and died ca. 1676 in Calvert County. Guy was reportedly married to Sarah Wright.

She was born in Europe 15 Dec 1741 to Abraham Weis and Margareth. They were the parents of ten children. She died 23 Sep 1802. He died 8 Jan 1804 in Frederick Town.
