Con esta obra, que pretende conocer la plegaria eucarística desde dentro, José Manuel Bernal esboza un comentario teológico y pastoral sobre la plegaria de acción de gracias. Su propósito es ofrecer a los orantes un conocimiento profundo de la anáfora y abrirles horizontes nuevos de creatividad. Para ello, acude a la tradición litúrgica hebrea intentando descubrir el tipo de plegaria que pronunció Jesús en la última cena al bendecir el pan y el vino. Y examina luego cómo acogió la comunidad cristiana la bendición de Jesús y cómo esa plegaria fue cuajando en formas concretas, hasta convertirse en la anáfora de la Iglesia. El deseo del autor no es tanto ilustrar la mente cuanto contribuir a la autenticidad de las celebraciones.
