Irish Literature

Irish literature's roots have been traced to the 7th-9th century. This is a rich and hardy literature starting with descriptions of the brave deeds of kings, saints and other heroes. These were followed by generous veins of religious, historical, genealogical, scientific and other works. The development of prose, poetry and drama raced along with the times. Modern, well-known Irish writers include: William Yeats, James Joyce, Sean Casey, George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, John Synge and Samuel Beckett.

Lipsius (1547-1606) was a 16th century humanist, scholar errant, and prolific correspondent who sought to reclaim the concept of letter-writing that had died during the Dark and Middle Ages. Here, he describes the serious, the learned, and the familiar letter, as well as such topics as conversational style, clarity, two kinds of simplicity, elegance, and decorum. Translated and edited by R. V. Young and M. Thomas Hester (both English, N. Carolina State U.), this edition prints the original Latin facing the English translation on each page. James Joyce and the Internal World of the Replacement Child

This book is an exploration of the internal world of James Joyce with particular emphasis on his being born into his parents’ grief at the loss of their firstborn son, offering a new perspective on his emotional difficulties. Mary Adams links Joyce’s profound sense of guilt and abandonment with the trauma of being a ‘replacement child’ and compares his experience with that of two psychoanalytic cases, as well as with Freud and other well-known figures who were replacement children. Issues such as survivor guilt, sibling rivalry, the ‘illegitimate’ replacement son, and the ‘dead mother’ syndrome are discussed. Joyce is seen as maturing from a paranoid, fearful state through hi...

The Chessman Enigma

Somebody is killing innocent people all over Wales leaving headless chess pieces as a calling card. The four Welsh Forces are at their wits' end and they have no clues. The killings seem to be without motive. A new dedicated unit, The Serious Crime Squad, is formed to work from a new base which is situated in a Cardiff terraced house. The team consists of two Detective Inspectors. Mike Karetzi is young, unorthodox and a maverick, whereas Evan Jones is pedantic, works by the book and is nearing retiring age. The third member is a big, black sixty-year-old woman who is an expert in computers and forensics. Later they recruit an ex-con for his special expertise on gaining access to places normally inaccessible. However, the killer, codenamed 'The Chessman' by the unit, is no fool and he's very clever and very cunning. The Chessman is hell-bent on completing his mission and won't be denied by anyone. He wants to be rich, very rich.
