Pedestrian mobility and the regeneration of the European city centreSpatial Metro, a project largely funded by the EU, aims to make city visits more enjoyable for pedestrians by making cities easier to navigate, easier to walk around and easier to understand and appreciate.This is achieved in various ways, including illuminating characteristic buildings, providing 'metro style' maps as well as appropriate information and signposting for pedestrians and the application of GPS technology.Together with municipalities and universities, five cities (Norwich, Bristol, Rouen, Koblenz and Biel/Bienne) in North West Europe have carried out pilot studies and exchanged experiences. In this publication, their findings are shared with the reader.

CItyMaker presents a method and a set of tools to generate alternative solutions for an urban context. The method proposes the use of a combined set of design patterns encoding typical design moves used by urban designers. The combination of patterns generates different layouts which can be adjusted by manipulating several parameters in relation to updated urban indicators. The patterns were developed from observation of typical urban design procedures, first encoded as discursive grammars and later translated into parametric design patterns. The CItyMaker method and tools allows the designer to compose a design solution from a set of programmatic premises and fine-tune it by pulling parameters whilst checking the changes in urban indicators. These tools improve the designer's awareness of the consequences of their design moves.
A new book by Play the City. From Cape Town to Amsterdam to Istanbul, the book sheds light into the particular applications and outcomes of City Gaming in diverse planning and city making regimes worldwide. Following Ekim Tan's PhD work on city gaming, this book has been designed to make her research more accessible to all. The book features a chapter dedicated to unravelling the city-gaming method as developed by the Play the City teams, with case studies from Shenzhen, Cape Town, Amsterdam, Almere and Istanbul. This book, which resulted from an intensive discourse between experts from several disciplines – complexity theorists, cognitive scientists, philosophers, urban planners and urban designers, as well as a zoologist and a physiologist – addresses various issues regarding cities.
