This collection is based on results of the 26th International Baltic Conference on Materials Engineering which is a continuation of the regular Materials Societies of Baltic Countries and Association of Baltic Materials Societies conferences. The aim of this book is to present the wide range of papers on advanced engineering materials and materials processing technologies, practice of application of engineering materials, surface engineering and tribology.
Childhood in the Late Ottoman Empire and After
This volume explores the variety of ways in which childhood was experienced, lived and remembered in the late Ottoman Empire and its successor states. The period of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was a time of rapid change, and the history of childhood reflects the impact of new expectations, lived realities and national responsibilities on the youngest members of societies undergoing monumental change because of ideological, wartime and demographic shifts. Drawing on comparisons both within the Balkans, Turkey and the Arab lands and with Western Europe and beyond, the chapters investigate the many ways in which upheaval and change affected the youth. Particular attention is paid to changing conceptions of childhood, gender roles and newly dominant national imperatives. Sick and Elderly Political Prisoners in Erdogan's Turkey
The jails in Turkey have long been mentioned in the same breath as inhumane actions and the breach of even the most basic rights, especially against the political prisoners. The violations have reached to unprecedented levels in parallel with the emergence of the current political-Islamist authoritarianism. The oppressive regime under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s rule instrumentalized the country’s legal system to muzzle the political dissidence, turning the prisons into concentration camps. The number of inmates behind the bars has reached historic highs. Hosting convicts much more than their capacities, the prisons, which were already substantially subpar, have fallen way below the minimum acceptable standards for human dignity. Patients in particular bore the most of the brunt of this precipitated deterioration of the prison conditions and the wrath of the Turkish regime against its opponents.
Asian Cinemas
The West’s current fascination with Asian cinema must be viewed in the context of a complex and often problematic relationship between Western scholars, students, viewers, and Asian films. This book examines a number of detailed case studies (such as the films of Ozu, Bruce Lee, Hong Kong and Turkish cinema, Hindi melodramas, Godzilla films, Taiwanese directors, and Fifth Generation Chinese cinema) and uses them to investigate the limitations of Anglo–U.S. theoretical models and critical paradigms. By engaging readers with familiar areas of critical discourse (such as postcolonial criticism, "national cinema," "genre," "authorship," and "stardom") the book aims to introduce within such contexts the "unfamiliar" case studies that will be explored in depth and detail.
Sanctity in the North
With original translations of primary texts and articles by leading researchers in the field, Sanctity in the North gives an introduction to the literary production associated with the cult of the saints in medieval Scandinavia. For more than five hundred years, Nordic clerics and laity venerated a host of saints through liturgical celebrations, written manuscripts, visual arts, and oral traditions. Textual evidence of this widespread and important aspect of medieval spirituality abounds. Written biographies (or vitae), compendia of witnessed miracles, mass propers, homilies, sagas and chronicles, dramatic scripts, hymns, and ballads are among the region's surviving medieval manuscripts and early published books. Sanctity in the North features English translations of texts from Latin or vernacular Nordic languages, in many cases for the first time. The accompanying essays concerning the texts, saints, cults, and history of the period complement the translations and reflect the contributors' own disciplinary groundings in folklore, philology, medieval, and religious studies.
Hz. Ebubekir'in Yüz Veciz Sözü
Hz. Ebubekir’den bahseden dinî eserlerin hemen hepsinde, O, büyük bir halife ve eşsiz bir komutandır. Sıddıklık makamına ulaşması sebebiyle insanların sevgisine ve övgüsüne mazhar olmuştur. Bir yönden O’nun sözleri de Hz. Peygamber’in (s.a.v) sözleri gibi değerli bulunmuş ve “Sad Kelime-i Hz. Ebubekir” olarak kitaplara geçerek eşsizleşmiştir. Hz. Peygamber’in (s.a.v) mübarek sözleri; kırk hadis, yüz hadis, iki yüz elli hadis, beş yüz hadis olarak yaygınlaşmıştır. Buna benzer bir tarzda Hz. Ebubekir’in ve diğer üç halifenin de sözleri derlenmiştir. Hepsi bir arada “Sad Kelime-i Çıhâr Yâr-ı Güzîn” adı altında bazen müstakil kitap ve bazen de kitap içinde bir bölüm olarak istinsah edilmiş ve hatta şerhleri yapılmıştır. Hz. Peygamber’in (s.a.v) hadislerinden yüz hadis derleyenlerin maksatları ne ise Dört Büyük Halife’nin yüz sözünü derleyenlerin de maksatları aynı olsa gerektir.
