Participation by 16-19 year olds in education and training

The Education Committee accepts that changes to student support needed to be made, but says that the delay in deciding on allocations and the guiding principles for distribution should not have been allowed to happen. The report states that the Government should have done more to acknowledge the Educational Maintenance Allowance's (EMA) combined impact on participation, attainment and retention, before it decided how to restructure financial support. The bursary scheme which is to replace the EMA will inevitably lead to inconsistencies which could distort young people's choices of where to study. It is not persuaded that bursaries administered by schools and colleges will necessarily be fair...

Integrate the freshest research with clinical practice Occupational therapy (OT) practitioners often lack the fundamental skills to conduct or effectively use research, illustrating a disturbing gap between the advancement of theoretical concepts and the extent to which concepts are actually applied. The Scholarship of Practice: Academic-Practice Collaborations for Promoting Occupational Therapy closes this gap by presenting a conceptual framework that integrates theory and research with clinical practice. Leaders in the field provide insightful, thought-provoking ideas and strategies to promote research and facilitate effective new concepts and theories to hands-on practitioners. The Schola...

14-19 diplomas

In October 2004, the Tomlinson report (downloadable at http://www.dfes.gov.uk/14-19/documents/Final%20Report.pdf) set out wide-ranging proposals for changes to the curriculum and examination arrangements for the education of 14 to 19 year olds. In February 2005, the Government published its response in the form of a White Paper (Cm. 6476, ISBN 9780101647625) detailing a 10-year reform programme including the introduction of 14 new awards (originally called vocational Diplomas); thus rejecting the overarching Diploma award recommended in the Tomlinson report. Whilst stating its belief that the proposed changes would have been better structured and more coherent had Tomlinson's proposals been adopted, the Committee's report examines the design, development and implementation of the Government's Diplomas scheme.

Twenty-three-year-old Anna is mesmerized when she meets thirty-one-year-old Edmund, a medical student attending a university in Budapest, Hungary. While Anna sees nothing wrong with her relationship with Edmund, her parents and others are critical of her dating a black man from Kenya. In this lead story in a collection of seven, Love Me Black or Love Me White describes the hypocrisy of the communist regime as well as the world seeing only skin color instead of human beings. The stories in Love Me Black or Love Me White are charged with contemporary interesthuman dignity in an indifferent world as seen through the eyes of author Agnes Arany. Based on real events, each story takes place in a d...
