Literary History and Avant-Garde Poetics in the Antipodes
Avant-garde poetry in the Antipodes causes all sorts of trouble for literary history. It is an avant-garde that seems to arrive too late and yet right on time. In 1897, Christopher Brennan made his own version of Un Coup de Des, the same year Mallarme published it in Cosmopolis. In the 1940s, the same period avant-gardism was declared dead or fatally injured due to the Ern Malley affair, Harry Hooton began writing a significant body of experimental poetry. From the 1950s to the 1970s, Australian Dada emerged 'belatedly' through figures like Jas H. Duke (Tristan Tzara had previously sung Aboriginal songs at the Cabaret Voltaire in 1916). First Nations and Migrant poets then began reinventing avant-garde poetry in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. This book maintains that such a confounding literary history poses a distinct challenge to the theories of the avant-gardes we have become accustomed to and changes our perspective of avant-garde time.

This book analyses the evolution of the city of Rome, in particular, papal Rome, from the plague of 1656 until 1870 when it became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The authors explore papal Rome as a resilient city that had to cope with numerous crises during this period. By focusing on a selection of different crises in Rome, the book combines cultural, political, and economic history to examine key turning points in the city’s history. The book is split into chapters exploring themes such as diplomacy and international relations, disease, environmental disasters, famine, public debt, and unravels the political, economic, and social consequences of these transformative events. All the chapters are based on untapped original sources, chiefly from the State Archive in Rome, the Vatican Archives, the Rome Municipal Archives, the École Française Library, the National Library, and the Capitoline Library.

Durante i sei mesi di Expo 2015 sono stati migliaia gli articoli che i giornali nazionali e stranieri hanno dedicato agli appuntamenti dell’Esposizione Universale. È mancata tuttavia una riflessione. Da qui la necessità di raccontare cosa significa investire su un grande evento e quali ritorni riescono a ottenere gli investitori e, soprattutto, la collettività. Questo volume raccoglie le testimonianze dirette dei principali protagonisti di Expo Milano, i quali raccontano cosa hanno realizzato, come e con che risultati. La «Lezione di Expo 2015» è utile per preservare quella esperienza e cercare di utilizzarla nella costruzione di altri grandi eventi. Il modello di Milano è stato ripreso nelle prossime Esposizioni di «Astana 2017» e «Dubai 2020» che rappresentano già da ora un’opportunità per imprese e professionisti del nostro paese.
The Roman Historical Tradition
The study of Regal and Republican Rome presents a difficult and yet exciting challenge. The extant evidence, which for the most part is literary, is late, sparse, and difficult, and the value of it has long been a subject of intense and sometimes heated scholarly discussion. This volume provides students with an introduction to a range of important problems in the study of ancient Rome during the Regal and Republican periods in one accessible collection, bringing together a diverse range of influential papers. Of particular importance is the question of the value of the historiographical evidence (i.e. what the Romans themselves wrote about their past). By juxtaposing different and sometimes incompatible reactions to the evidence, the collection aims to challenge its readers and invite them to join the debate, and to assess the ancient evidence and modern interpretations of it for themselves.
