A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction, wrote Virginia Woolf. Published in 1920, A Room of One's Own has often been heralded as the first modern work of feminist criticism. It remains one of the most widely read, quoted, and analyzed texts of its kind. This book explores the life and legacy of Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960), the most-published African American woman of the first half of the twentieth century. Famous today as the author of Their Eyes Were Watching God, Hurston was also an anthropologist and a folklorist. In this new biography, Cheryl Hopson casts Hurston as a modern woman on the move, particularly as a collector of stories in and around the Jim Crow South. Hopson details her rejection by the Harlem Renaissance as well as her recovery by Black feminists such as Alice Walker years after her death. Narrative is everywhere and has unique powers: to enchant and inspire, to make sense of our lives and ourselves and to afford us an enriched understanding of alternative worlds and lives and of better futures – though narrative also has the potential to coerce and oppress. Narrative is at the centre at all stages of the English curriculum and has been the subject of a burgeoning critical industry. In nineteenth-century England, marriage between first cousins was both legally permitted and perfectly acceptable.
