With the help of discourse analysis and ideology critique, Ellen Wesemüller establishes a theoretical framework to analyze African nationalism in apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa. Following the constructivist school of thought, the study adopts the assumption that nations are "imagined communities" which are built on "invented traditions". It shows that historically and analytically, there are two distinct concepts of nationalism: "constitutional" and "ethnic" nationalism. These concepts can be retraced in South Africa where they form the central antagonism of black political thought. The study of post-apartheid African nationalism is placed in its historical perspective by focusin...

More girls are producing media today than at any other point in U.S. history, and they are creating media texts in virtually every format currently possible--magazines, films, musical recordings, and websites. Girls Make Media explores how young female media producers have reclaimed and reconfigured girlhood as a site for radical social, cultural, and political agency. Central to the book is an analysis of Riot Grrrl--a 1990s feminist youth movement from a fusion of punk rock and gender theory-and the girl power movement it inspired. The author also looks at the rise of girls-only media education programs, and the creation of girls' studies. This book will be essential reading for anyone seeking to understand contemporary female youth in today's media culture.
The Future of Sociology brings together outstanding sociologists in a variety of areas to present their expectations for the future development of sociological knowledge in their areas of expertise. The editors suggest that sociology, having forfeited primacy in the study of many social questions to other fields in the past few years, needs to become more responsive to changes. They react favourably to the increased concern among sociologists with research methodology, development of better data bases, and the application of knowledge. Specific prognoses for different areas of the field follow, covering the theoretical and methodological core of the discipline and different subfields -- social institutions, phenomena, agents of cha
