This volume offers a variety of perspectives on contemporary fatherhood: from analyses of literature, film, drama, and popular culture, to issues tackled by psychology, gender studies, and social sciences. What’s in a Text? Inquiries into the Textual Cornucopia
Numerous linguists of various orientations, translators and literary scholars share an interest in text. As students of language with very diverse interests and aims, they ask themselves, if only subconsciously, the following questions: What kind(s) of texts do we study? Why do we study them? What are we looking for? What do and don’t we find? What do we do with whatever we do find? What does it tell us about language, its speakers or the human mind? Generally, what is (a) text for me as a linguist and/or translator? In the present volume, the questions are brought onto the level of the conscious and addressed by several practitioners in the fields of linguistics and translation – contributions with a literary slant also have a linguistic orientation. Although ultimate answers to these questions may not exist, the ambition of the book is to help the reader appreciate the richness of text and the variety of texts as a treasure-trove for scholars representing multifarious approaches to language.

“Ex-Centric Souths: (Re)Imagining Southern Centers and Peripheries” adds a voice in ongoing attempts to chart new routes and to decenter the South in many ways in the hope of exploring Southern identity and multiple Souths. A Cognitive Linguistics Account of Wordplay
Even though the ability to create witty puns seems to be an inherent skill of humankind, an apt explanation of their linguistic nature has evaded many academic descriptions. This monograph offers a novel conceptual perspective on the creation of meaning observable beneath the surface of wordplay. The rationale for such an approach lies in the fact that language, and hence wordplay, is a cognitive phenomenon which involves some underlying complex mental processes, such as thinking in terms of image schemas, conceptual metaphor and metonymy, or blending, to mention just a few. The book provides a survey of relevant linguistic research, introduces the main tenets of cognitive linguistics, and offers an analysis of wordplay in the light of available cognitive literature. The final outcome of this work is an array of intricate mechanisms that govern creation and comprehension of wordplay. The book will be of interest to anybody who finds wordplay research appealing, no matter their level of expertise in the field.

This comprehensive, state-of-the-art bibliography documents the most recent research activity in the vibrant field of language, gender and sexuality. Exile
Peopled with diasporas and individuals, the space of exile persistently exists, though it cannot be circumscribed. Papers collected in the volume traverse that space in various directions, shedding some light on its manifold regions, niches, and chasms. Through raising diverse questions of ontology, subjectivity, power, otherness, domination, meaning, etc., the book aims at fulfilling its modest task of foregrounding points of orientation in the space's topography, and perhaps of tracing out paths linking its different areas.
Signs of Culture
Baudrillard's culture of simulation destroys our sense of paramount reality. It has created, as Chris Rojek puts it, a "huge refugee camp in which viewers, dissociated from place and community, are caught up in global indexing and dragging processes which no one controls." What is thus also, perversely, inscribed within the cultural landscape is a nostalgia for authenticity, for the dissimulated spaces and places which, though no longer there, stimulate their semiotic reconstructions and reproductions. And yet "[t]he possibility of lying is the prioprium of semiosis," as Umberto Eco has once remarked. Truth and falsity are inherent in the sign and in representation generally, subverting the tertium non datur principle. This book is an attempt to unmask representation, to see through the signs of the real, and through the real itself, at the realm of simulation. Those signs are not only signs of what they signify, but also signs of culture, of the cultural real which the articles included in the volume try to penetrate from various theoretical and philosophical perspectives.
