Photography Performing Humor

Photography Performing Humor

New perspectives on humor within photography Despite the ubiquitous presence of photographic humor in art and popular media, the phenomenon has as yet received very little scholarly attention. Focusing on staged humor rather than on comic effects of snapshot photography, this volume brings together leading scholars in the field addressing humor performed in front of the camera, often specifically created for the camera, and the performative joke-work done by the medium itself. A first section explores how photography, due to its “shattering” qualities, turns into a privileged medium for eliciting humorous effects and how humor can be discerned within the photographic event. A second section discusses the toolbox of photographic trickery (photomontage, double exposure and cinematic movement) that allows photography to mock itself. The book closes with a section on photographic wit in conceptual art, both in canonized and more locally distinct practices. With artists’ pages from Paulien Oltheten, Lieven Segers and David Helbich

A porn addict amateur who collects dirty Italian comics in an ?animalistic? way, Gonzo applies a conservative technique whereby he hides these questionably viewable images within scientific libraries. This book addresses a widespread form of collecting that avoids the subject of the ?arty? comic strip and instead dives headlong into obscene material and the viewer?s experience of it. This mega-collection of pornographic Italian comics faithfully presents the genre from its sensual, sexual-phobic beginnings to its porno-violent shift, between the years 1985 and 2000. Voyeuristic and chock-full of thematic variants, from transgenderism and homoeroticism to fairy tale, zombie, and cyber porn.

Sol LeWitt

  • Categories: Art

"Books are the best medium for many artists working today," Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) once declared. A pioneer of artist's books, and co-founder of New York's Printed Matter bookstore in 1976, LeWitt is closely identified with the book as an art form. Starting with 1967's Serial Project No. 1 (from Aspen magazine), and closing with Chicago (Morning Star Publications, 2002), this book reproduces covers and spreads from Sol LeWitt's massive oeuvre of artist's books, almost all of which are now rarities. As artist's book historian Clive Phillpot notes, "the principle attribute of LeWitt's books is one common to all books: a dependence upon sequence, whether of families of marks or objects, or of single or permuted series which have clear beginnings and endings." Critical observations from LeWitt himself and a variety of scholars make this volume the most sustained treatment of LeWitt's prolific activity in this area to date.

10 Landscapes - Documentary

This book documents a residency research project (2007-2017) founded by Viaindustriae, a cultural non-profit organization and a collective that aims at investigating the intermediate territories between art and architecture, new forms of communication, and activating the artistic message through different methods. Initially based on specific research into a marginal and radical rural-mountain landscape in Umbria that used 'hypertextual' methods and projects to draw links between different sites and 'thematic' landscapes, the outcome is a broad investigation, exhibition, and catalogue on public spaces, site-specific art practices, and interventions on landscape in Italy and beyond. Exhibition: CIAC -- Centro Italiano Arte Contemporanea, Foligno, Italy (09.09.2017 - 07.01.2018).
