Climate Activism
What is activism? The answer is, typically, that it is a form of opposition, often expressed on the streets. Skoglund and Böhm argue differently. They identify forms of 'insider activism' within corporations, state agencies and villages, showing how people seek to transform society by working within the system, rather than outright opposing it. Using extensive empirical data, Skoglund and Böhm analyze the transformation of climate activism in a rapidly changing political landscape, arguing that it is time to think beyond the tensions between activism and enterprise. They trace the everyday renewable energy actions of a growing 'epistemic community' of climate activists who are dispersed across organizational boundaries and domains. This book is testament to a new way of understanding activism as an organizational force that brings about the transition towards sustainability across business and society and is of interest to social science scholars of business, renewable energy and sustainable development.

In this ground-breaking book, Jörg Radtke offers for the first time within research, a comprehensive insight into the range of organizational structures of community energy projects in Germany and their contribution to the Energiewende. Based on nationwide quantitative survey data and in-depth analyses of selected case studies of solar, wind and geothermal projects, Radtke documents the social structure and motivations of participating citizens. He examines new forms of material participation, community building and co-determination within the mostly volunteer-led community energy projects based on the civic engagement patterns of active “green citizens”. The author identifies a new form of individualistic participation and collective modes of action in line with new types of project-oriented participation between business, politics and civil society within sustainability transformation processes of the early 21st century.

Minijobs in Deutschland
Fabian Beckmann untersucht mit Minijobs eine kontrovers debattierte Beschäftigungsform im deutschen Arbeitsmarkt- und Sozialmodell. Angesichts einer „Minijobdebatte ohne Minijobber“ liegt der Fokus der Analyse auf der subjektiven Wahrnehmung und Beurteilung der Arbeitssituation von geringfügig Beschäftigten. Die empirischen Befunde zeichnen ein ambivalentes Bild: Zahlreichen erwerbsbezogenen objektiven Risiken von Minijobs stehen überwiegend positive subjektive Beurteilungen der Arbeitsqualität sowie eine hohe Arbeitszufriedenheit unter den Beschäftigten entgegen. Der Autor unterstreicht die Bedeutung subjektiver Analysezugänge und multidimensionaler Untersuchungsansätze für die sozialwissenschaftliche Arbeitsforschung.

The transformation towards a carbon-neutral society can only succeed in cooperation with citizens and not against them. This edited volume shows ways to achieve this goal. It presents the results of the interdisciplinary project “Experiencing Politics and Law, Shaping the Future” and the project itself. Citizens were at the centre of the project. Supported by experts in law and political science, they developed ideas on how to improve citizen participation in climate policies. In sum, the contributions form a dialogue between the citizens’ perspective, legal and political science analyses and the views of practitioners.
