Dunmore's War of 1774 was the culmination of a long series of disputes between settlers and Native Americans in western Virginia and Pennsylvania. In an effort to quell the increasingly violent Indian incursions, Virginia Governor John Murray, the Earl of Dunmore, carried on a successful retaliatory campaign known as "Dunmore's War." This book presents a history of that war through the use of primary documents selected from the mass of manuscript historical material in the famous Draper Collection at the Wisconsin Historical Society. Numerous footnotes throughout the volume provide a wealth of biographical information, as do the lists of muster rolls and biographies of field officers at the end of the book.

Nature at Your Door

We are an integral part of the ecosystem where we live. In this book we learn that what we do in our yards matters just as much as the way our local parks and nature preserves are managed. Author and professor of landscape ecology Sara Gagné focuses on the ecological importance of our day-to-day activities and spaces we are most familiar with and can most influence. With cutting-edge science, anecdotal experiences, and practical recommendations, Sara brings the message of how people and nature are vitally connected in the urban and suburban landscape. Each chapter is dedicated to a particular space—beginning with the yard, moving onto the street, the park, the greenway, the neighborhood, ...

This book explores the unanticipated benefits that may arise after wars and conflicts, showing how the preservation of battlefields and the establishment of borderlands can create natural capital in the former landscapes of war. The editors call this Collateral Value, in contrast to the collateral damage that war inflicts upon infrastructure, natural capital, and human capital. The book includes case studies recounting successes and failures, opportunities and risks, and ambitious proposals. The book is organized in two sections. The first visits U.S., English, and French battlefield sites dating from medieval England to World War I. The second explores borderlands located on several contine...

This title meets a great demand for training in spatial analysis tools accessible to a wide audience. Landscape ecology continues to grow as an exciting discipline with much to offer for solving pressing and emerging problems in environmental science. Much of the strength of landscape ecology lies in its ability to address challenges over large areas, over spatial and temporal scales at which decision-making often occurs. As the world tackles issues related to sustainability and global change, the need for this broad perspective has only increased. Furthermore, spatial data and spatial analysis (core methods in landscape ecology) are critical for analyzing land-cover changes world-wide. Whil...
