The Transcultural Critic: Sabahattin Ali and Beyond
The central theme of this volume is the work of Sabahattin Ali, the Turkish author and translator from German into Turkish who achieved posthumous success with his novel Kürk Mantolu Madonna (The Madonna in the Fur Coat). Our contributors analyze this novel, which takes place largely in Germany, and several other texts by Ali in the context of world literature, (cultural) translation, and intertextuality. Their articles go far beyond the intercultural love affair that has typically dominated the discussion of Madonna. Other articles consider Zafer Şenocak’s essay collection Deutschsein and transcultural learning through picture books. An interview with Selim Özdoğan rounds out the issue.

A History of Ottoman Poetry
Elias John Wilkinson Gibb (1857-1901) was a Scottish Orientalist who was born and educated in Glasgow. After studying Arabic and Persian, he developed an interest in Turkish language and literature, especially poetry, and in 1882 he published Ottoman Poems Translated into English Verse in the Original Forms. This was a forerunner to the six-volume classic presented here, A History of Ottoman Poetry, published in London between 1900 and 1909. Siyavush of Our Century
"Siyavush of Our Century" was written by political visionary Mammad Amin Rasulzadeh (1884-1955) who headed the Musavat Party and helped set up the Azerbaijan parliamentary democratic republic in 1918, the first such republic of Turks and Muslims in the eastern world. The turmoil of the times, however, proved too much for Rasulzadeh's young government. On April 25, 1920, Bolshevik troops crossed into Azerbaijan and entered Baku on April 28. They demanded the resignation of Azerbaijan's Parliament and set up their own government. The fledgling democracy, in only its 23rd month, collapsed immediately. Azerbaijan remained under communist rule until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. "Siyavush of Our Century" is a unique work of politics & history, philosophy & literature founded upon the ancient myths and legends of the Turkik peoples. It was written in July 1920 and first published in Istanbul in 1925. It is widely recognised as a classic by the people of Azerbaijan.
