Governing Smart Cities as Knowledge Commons
The rise of 'smart' – or technologically advanced – cities has been well documented, while governance of such technology has remained unresolved. Integrating surveillance, AI, automation, and smart tech within basic infrastructure as well as public and private services and spaces raises a complex set of ethical, economic, political, social, and technological questions. Developments in Telecommunications
Published in 1997. Developments in information technology and telecommunications are giving new meaning to the concepts of space and time. In particular the concepts of "local" and "global" are starting to merge together even though they apparently represent entirely different scales. One example is "telework", also known as "telecommuting". Another is the rapid growth of outsourcing. These developments are based on new technologies such as multimedia, rapid improvements in storage technologies, and the information superhighway, including the Internet. The structure of the world's telecommunications industry is changing and, in addition, political and social autonomy is breaking down. The role of the nation state is challenged, as are the old avenues and levers of political power. Nation states have attempted to grab functional control over the emerging infrastructure, but they are ultimately unable to exert control over the flood of information surging around the world. There still remains a strong middle ground between local and global, dominated by multinational corporaions and governments.

Studies in Segregation and Desegregation
This title was first published in 2002: Over the past fifty years, numerous geographical concepts and methodologies have been developed to study urban segregation. This volume brings together an international team of scholars, practitioners and policy makers to examine the latest of these. The first section of this fascinating book sees contributors proposing innovative ideas and new conceptual models for the study of segregation in cities that undergo globalization. They assess the idea that segregation should be studied for individuals in respect to different spatial resolutions, including the study of the formation of inter-ethnic spatial networks. This is followed by an examination of questions concerning the associations among segregation, poverty and policies. The final section highlights patterns of segregation in four countries: South Africa, China, Canada and the Ruhr area, each of them representing different multicultural and transformational aspects.
