This collection of lectures and essays by eminent researchers in the field, many of them nobel laureates, is an outgrow of a special event held at CERN in late 2009, coinciding with the start of LHC operations. Careful transcriptions of the lectures have been worked out, subsequently validated and edited by the lecturers themselves. This unique insight into the history of the field includes also some perspectives on modern developments and will benefit everyone working in the field, as well as historians of science.
The exploration of the subnuclear world is done through increasingly complex experiments covering a wide range of energies and in a large variety of environments — from particle accelerators, underground detectors to satellites and space laboratories. For these research programs to succeed, novel techniques, new materials and new instrumentation need to be used in detectors, often on a large scale. Recent results from all types of high energy colliders (e⁺e⁻, pp, ep) are presented from the view point of electroweak interaction and QCD/Jet physics together with related phenomenological reviews. Expected physics at future colliders, both being built or planned, are also discussed including e+e- linear collider, pp collider and heavy ion collider.
The search for dark matter is one of the most relevant topics in astroparticle physics today. It involves many different experimental techniques that should collectively contribute significantly to the identification of the nature and characteristics of the dark matter constituents, offering at the same time much room for new technological developments. The theoretical framework is also essential, both for properly interpreting the different results and for suggesting the most interesting possible candidates and search strategies. This book compares the methods, the developments and the results.
Annotation The International Conference on Calorimetry in Particle Physics has become the major forum for state-of-the-art developments of calorimetry techniques. The tenth conference was attended by about 150 physicists from 20 countries and covered all aspects of calorimetric particle detection and measurements, with emphasis on high energy physics experiments as well as experiments in nuclear physics and astrophysics.The proceedings contain three parts: introductory papers, contributed papers and a summary. The introductory papers start with a historical review of the development of calorimetry technology, and continue with overviews of the current status of calorimetry in high energy physics and astrophysics, which are followed by discussions on calorimetry in future accelerator facilities, such as linear colliders and the Super B Factory.
