Badiuzzaman Said Nursi dilahirkan pada tahun 1873 di kampung bernama "Nurs", di timur Anatolia. Nama "Nursi" ialah sempena nama kampung ini. Beliau menerima pendidikan asas daripada para ulama terkenal di daerahnya. Ketika masih muda, beliau telah menunjukkan kecerdikan dan kemampuan yang luar biasa untuk belajar. Hal ini membuatkannya terkenal di kalangan guru-guru, kawan-kawan dan orang ramai. Ketika berusia 16 tahun, beliau mengalahkan beberapa ulama terkemuka yang telah menjemputnya ke satu majlis perbahasan (ketika itu perbahasan ialah satu amalan biasa di kalangan ulama). Kemudian beliau terus mengalahkan berbagai kumpulan ulama lain sebanyak beberapa kali dalam majlis perbahasan. Selepas peristiwa ini, beliau pun digelar Badiuzzaman (Kekaguman Zaman).
