An Integrated Nonlinear Wind-Waves Model for Offshore Wind Turbines

This thesis presents a numerical model capable of simulating offshore wind turbines exposed to extreme loading conditions. External condition-based extreme responses are reproduced by coupling a fully nonlinear wave kinematic solver with a hydro-aero-elastic simulator. First, a two-dimensional fully nonlinear wave simulator is developed. The transient nonlinear free surface problem is formulated assuming the potential theory and a high-order boundary element method is implemented to discretize Laplace's equation. For temporal evolution a second-order Taylor series expansion is used. The code, after validation with experimental data, is successfully adopted to simulate overturning plunging br...

The aim of this volume is to explore the challenges posed by the rapid development of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) within the field of engineering. CFD is already essential to research concerned with fluid flow in civil engineering, and its further potential for application in wind engineering is highly promising. State-of-the-art papers from all over the world are contained here, illuminating the present parameters of the field, as well as suggesting fruitful areas for further research. Eleven papers have been contributed by invited speakers outstanding in the fields of CFD and wind engineering. This volume will serve as a vehicle to promote further development in computational wind engineering.

This book explores the border-crossing mobilities of refugees within Europe. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Germany and Italy, it examines the precarious everyday lives of non-citizens living between and beyond EU internal borders. With attention to the constant re-construction of borders within Europe through negotiation practices, the author shows how the tensions that exist between refugees on the move and the structural constraints that limit their movement produce ‘interstices’ – small spaces of possibility that open up as a result of refugees’ struggling within structural constraints. A comprehensive understanding of the long-term effects of EU borders upon refugees’ live...
