Insights into Romanian Political Discourse

This book is the first overview of Romanian political discourse, analysing samples of various political discourse genres (parliamentary and presidential campaign debates, political programs, political talk-shows, and festive speeches) and examining public perceptions and reactions to political discourse (protest slogans, memes, press editorials, and online comments). The focus is on present-day discursive practices with occasional references to the past. Attitude and Stance in Discourse

Stancetaking is inherent in verbal communication, as it is connected with the expression of subjectivity and the construction of intersubjectivity in discourse. This book presents theoretical findings in this field and their practical implications, exploring the variations in time and space of meaning negotiation processes in a large variety of communicative forms, including political and judicial discourse, journalism, fiction, private letters, informal conversations, and school debates. Some articles refer to events with a strong impact on social and political life, such as the COVID-19 pandemic or Ceaușescu’s trial. The volume’s approach is mainly pragma-rhetoric and interactional, but also interdisciplinary, promoting dialogue between stance researchers in different fields. There is a specific focus on possible applications of some key findings of stance research in improving inter-ethnic communication and the teaching of foreign languages, as well as students’ communicative abilities.

The Music of the Other

The great flood of world musics into our immediate cultural environment is not a simple matter of expanding global musical exchange, but rather many complex processes such as the growth of intercontinental tourism and the development of technologies in communication. Elegantly tracing the dimensions of these new musical encounters, Laurent Aubert considers the impact of world musics on our values, our habits and our cultural practices. His discussions of key questions about our contemporary music culture widen conventional ethnomusicological perspectives to consider the nature of Western society as a 'global village' and the impact of current Western demands on the future of world musics and their practitioners.

This volume brings together several leading scientists and practitioners from around the world to discuss the ecological and salutogenic design principles for creating a healthy built environment. These principles and applications are the most important scientific topic of health promotion that provides the context for a healthy lifestyle. The challenge for ecological design is to provide a green context for a healthy society dealing with built infrastructure that creates clean air, clean water, clean food, and clean land, which in turn are necessary for human health and wellbeing. In this book, these principles are intertwined with those of salutogenic design, which support human health globally.
