Out of print for twenty years, a new edition of Jim Clark 'Tribute to a Champion' by Eric Dymock will be published in the spring. Lightly edited and completely redesigned in colour throughout, this eagerly sought classic of motor racing celebrates the life and achievements of Jim Clark (1936-1968), World Champion 1963 and 1965. In the new book, Eric Dymock details his place in motor racing history and total command of Formula 1, portraying him as an individual, nail-biting and insecure, yet the greatest driver in any sort of motor sport. From a Scottish farming family Clark rewrote the annals of American racing at Indianapolis, coming second at his first attempt in 1963, winning in 1965. He ...

Ways of Listening

In recent years, many psychologists and cognitive scientists have published their views on the psychology of music. Unfortunately, this scientific literature has remained inaccessible to musicologists and musicians, and has neglected their insights on the subject. In Ways of Listening, musicologist Eric Clarke explores musical meaning, music's critical function in human lives, and the relationship between listening and musical material. Clarke outlines an "ecological approach" to understanding the perception of music. The way we hear and understand music is not simply a function of our brain structure or of the musical "codes" given to us by culture, Clarke argues. Instead, cognitive, psycho...

Black Gambit

A Cold War thriller by the author of Chinese Burnwith “rough-edged and life-size characters [and] an unromanticized finale . . . in the Le Carré mode” (Kirkus Reviews). The KGB has come for Alexandrai Zorin. He may be a brilliant scientist but, like Solzhenitsyn, he is a dissident. He now faces the horrors of interrogation in Lubyanka Prison. In Washington, Allan Scott’s special status in the State Department allows him to operate on his own terms. When Scott and his team decide to break Zorin out of Russia, they set in motion a series of events that no one but the president himself can stop. In Folsom Prison, inmate John Parker would run any risk for a chance at freedom. And Scott’s team is about to offer him that chance—all he has to do is take Zorin’s place, trade Folsom for Lubyanka, and become a pawn in Scott’s dangerous gambit. “Strong, well-plotted, compassionate . . . A fine suspense novel with contemporary relevance.” —The New York Times “Can only be compared to The Spy Who Came in from the Cold.” —Jack Higgins, author of The Eagle has Landed

Toys - from teddy bears to Barbie dolls to train sets - define our image of childhood innocence. But the truth is that toys represent a $21 billion a year industry, and with so much money at stake, the toy business is anything but child's play. In The Real Toy Story, investigative journalist Eric Clark exposes the startling truths behind Britain's favourite toys. Drawing on interviews with over 200 industry insiders, Clark names and shames the corporations spending millions on research into the best way to manipulate their target audience while manufacturing products in China under virtual slave labour conditions. In a world of cut-throat competition and cold-blooded marketing, toy companies are increasingly willing to sacrifice our children in the rush for profits. And as more children forsake cuddly play things for Ipods and cell phones, companies are using even more extreme tactics- unashamedly using sex and violence to sell dolls and action men to children as young as three - to make sure that their toy is the one that children want to have. The Real Toy Story is essential reading for the millions of adults who care about the toys they choose for the children in their lives.

Jim Clark

Jim Clark was arguably the best driver the world has seen and certainly one of the most versatile. He died when he was just 33 but by then the Scottish farmer's lad had surpassed the Grand Prix victory total of the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio. Even Fangio himself said he was the best ever driver. Clark started 73 races and won 25. He was World Champion in 1963 and 1965 and set Ford on its path to fame by pushing the Cosworth DFV engine to victory on its first F1 outing. He was also the first non-American to win Indianapolis 500.No one understands Jim Clark better than Eric Dymock, fellow Scot, long-time reporter on the racing scene at its highest level. Dymock has brought his definitive biography up to date by including in it what some contemporary heroes have to say about the man, and many previously unpublished photographs., Stunning production - virtual collector's edition, Endorsements from Dan Gurney and David Coulthard., Contains 50 new and unpublished photos.
