A humorous and honest account of an ex-pat reporter’s life in the south west of France. Packed with amusing anecdotes and true stories about the characters and places of the region. A must for anybody even thinking about crossing the Channel for the good life in rural France! Every summer thousands of Brits and other Europeans head to the south west of France for bliss, beauty and freedom. It’s great for a holiday - but what’s it like to actually live and work there? That is what reporter Chris Bockman decided to find out when he set up a Press Agency in Toulouse. His project was doomed (apparently) - he was constantly told by industry sages that nothing goes on there out of season. Bu...
Is the Prefect an exception, surviving only in France and some countries influenced by Napoleon? No! This book tells the varied stories of the resilience, in most European States and under different names, of the prefectoral institution. It is the first comparative book in English studying these territorial administrators who have a go-between role in centre-periphery relations and a nodal role in territorial governance. Gathering a multidisciplinary team of scholars under the auspices of the European Group for Public Administration, this volume offers a fine-grained analysis of 17 national cases, examines cross-country data, and proposes a theoretical frame made of a Weberian ideal-type with three variants, to better comprehend and explain the permanence and changes of the prefectoral figure.
On 16 July, at the instigation of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister entrusted Michel Van Den Berghe with the task of studying the feasibility of a "cyber campus" with all the players in the digital ecosystem. His aim: to define a new center of gravity for digital security and trust in France and Europe. The prefiguration report for the Cyber Campus was presented at the 2020 International Cybersecurity Forum in Lille by Cédric O, Secretary of State for Digital Affairs, and Michel Van Den Berghe. This document defines the major missions as well as the vision for this unifying project. It also presents the keys to its success, directly from the opportunity study that is also proposed.

The basic tenet of cognitive linguistics is that every linguistic expression is a construal relation. The first section of this volume focuses on issues of such construal and presentation of information, including figure-ground relations, image-schematic structures, and the role of syntactic constructions in information structure. In sections two and three papers are presented on cross-categorial polysemy between lexical and grammatical uses of a morpheme, and between different grammatical senses, and on the relationship between earlier lexical senses and later grammatical ones. The final section of the volume brings together studies which shed further light on transitivity and argument structure. The study of transitivity necessarily entails exploration of the relationship between syntactic constructions and the pragmatics and semantics conveyed by such constructions. As a whole, this collection of papers gives new evidence on the complexity and motivation of the mapping between linguistic form and function and offers a wealth of new directions for research on the construction of meaning at every level of the sentence.
