Iraq in Fragments

The project to transform Iraq from an impoverished dictatorship into a prosperous, functioning, multi-ethnic democracy that would act as a role-model to the states of the Arab Middle East will stand as one of the most ambitious political ventures of the modern era. Instead, the Coalition powers that took control of the country in 2003 have become mired in the politics of sect and class, of regional ambition and of religious authority. Having sucked out the centre of the old Iraqi state, they have been unable to establish effective national institutions to take its place, or to bestow a structure upon the political process inside Iraq that allows for peaceful competition for power. This book analyses in detail why the Iraqi polity fractured after the invasion, and the consequences of this fragmentation.

The Arms Dynamic in World Politics

Presented as a successor to the Cold War era book An Introduction to Strategic Studies, this volume explores issues of military security through a framework that links the issues of technology and world politics. Arguing that the technological aspect of the global strategic environment is partway through a centuries- long process of transformation sped up by the advent of the information age, the authors examine such issues as different levels of industrial development on security, what they argue is the relative infrequency of the use of force between states, the use of military threats such as mass destruction, concepts that military means create problems in themselves such as fear of war and insecurity, and finally, ways in which regulatory schemes such as disarmament can be put to use to solve some of those problems. It also examines the changing role of UK Forces in South Eastern Iraq as they prepare to hand over responsibility for security and assume the position of overwatch. The report therefore examines what overwatch means and whether the force levels proposed by the Government are sustainable. It concludes that the security situation continues to cause concern and that...

These studies concentrate on preventing the use of weapons of mass destruction. A common argument runs through all of the papers: that, while complacency must be avoided, much of the post-Cold War focus among Western governments on the threat posed by weapons of mass destruction is alarmist.

Asian Security in the Age of Globalization

This book examines the security challenges and opportunities that the nation-states of Asia confront in an era of globalization. With consideration of the increasingly border-less nature of international relations via the integrative process of globalization, this book explores the emerging threats to regional and national security in Asia. It looks beyond traditional military threats, analysing non-traditional aspects of security including economic, social, environmental, transnational, energy, health concerns and threats posed by organized-crime groups. Its approach is organized both theoretically and, in a country-specific, case study form which provides contemporary examples of the threats faced in the region. By acknowledging that contemporary Asian security has become much more complex and complicated, it highlights the uncertainty and instability that the nation-states of the Indo-Pacific region confront. Presenting both a globally oriented and expanded vision of Asian security, this book is an excellent resource for scholars and students of Asian Studies, International Relations and Global Studies.

The Propaganda Model Today

The Propaganda Model Today

While the individual elements of the propaganda system (or filters) identified by the Propaganda Model (PM) – ownership, advertising, sources, flak and anti-communism – have previously been the focus of much scholarly attention, their systematisation in a model, empirical corroboration and historicisation have made the PM a useful tool for media analysis across cultural and geographical boundaries. Despite the wealth of scholarly research Herman and Chomsky’s work has set into motion over the past decades, the PM has been subjected to marginalisation, poorly informed critiques and misrepresentations. Interestingly, while the PM enables researchers to form discerning predictions as regards corporate media performance, Herman and Chomsky had further predicted that the PM itself would meet with such marginalisation and contempt. In current theoretical and empirical studies of mass media performance, uses of the PM continue, nonetheless, to yield important insights into the workings of political and economic power in society, due in large measure to the model’s considerable explanatory power.
