This extraordinary work of journalism is an in-depth look at French author Emile Zola's time in England, when he fled to the country after he wrote 'J'Accuse...!' on the front page of the Paris daily L'Aurore, as his response to the Dreyfus affair. In it, Zola accused the highest levels of the French Army of obstruction of justice and antisemitism by having wrongfully convicted Alfred Dreyfus to life imprisonment on Devil's Island.

With Zola in England

With Zola in England Ernest Alfred Vizetelly Most people are by this time aware that M. Zola's gospel is work. In diligent study and composition he finds some measure of solace for every trouble. At times it is hard for him to take up the pen, but he forces himself to do so, and an hour later he has largely banished sorrow and anxiety, and at times has even dulled physical pain. He himself, heavy hearted as he was when the first novelty of his strolls around Oatlands had worn off, felt that he must have something to do We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and ...

L'OEuvre is the fourteenth novel in the Rougon-Macquart series by mile Zola. The title is often rendered in English as The Masterpiece or His Masterpiece. It refers to the struggles of the protagonist Claude Lantier to paint a great work reflecting his talent and genius. L'OEuvre is a fictional account of Zola's friendship with Paul Czanne and a fairly accurate portrayal of the Parisian art world in the mid-19th century. Many of the characteristics ascribed to Claude Lantier are a compound taken from the lives of several impressionist painters including Claude Monet, douard Manet, as well as Paul Czanne. Zola's self-portrait can be seen in the character of the novelist Pierre Sandoz.
