This text describes and illustrates with some 700 detailed anatomic and surgical drawings the whole spectrum of surgical procedures employed to treat acquired and congenital diseases of the heart and great vessels in adults and children. A rather traditional chapter on history of cardiac surgery precedes chapters dedicated to quality improvement, followed by ICU management in adult and pediatric cardiac surgery, and techniques of extracorporeal circulation in both age groups. Further special topics are cardiovascular tissue engineering, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, endovascular treatment of aortic diseases, and cardiac assist devices, including total artificial heart. Die moderne Herzchirurgie umfasst ein breites Spektrum von Eingriffen bei angeborenen und erworbenen Erkrankungen des Herzens und der herznahen Gefäße. Alle relevanten Eingriffe sind in diesem Band detailliert beschrieben und durch instruktive Zeichnungen illustriert, für jede Erkrankung werden die Operationsindikationen sorgfältig herausgearbeitet. Neben der herzchirurgischen Intensivtherapie sind auch aktuelle Entwicklungen wie Zelltherapie und Kunstherzimplantation berücksichtigt. Alle Kapitel wurden von ausgewiesenen Experten komplett neu verfasst - über 30 Autoren aus 20 herzchirurgischen Zentren vorwiegend im deutschsprachigen Raum haben zu dem Buch beigetragen. The first cardiovascular operation in Duesseldorf, a ligation of an open ductus arteriosus (Botallo), was performed in 1938 by E.K. Frey. This paper is a contribution to the topological study of vector fields on manifolds. In particular we shall be concerned with the problems of exist ence of r linearly independent vector fields. For r = 1 the classical result of H. Hopf asserts that the vanishing of the Euler characteristic is the necessary and sufficient condition, and our results will give partial extens ions of Hopf's theorem to the case r > 1.
