A Question of Priorities
Contributing to the recent interest in the immediate postwar period as the key to the later history of the two Germanies, Boehling (history, U. of Maryland-Baltimore County) examines the decisions made by the US Military Government regarding German municipal personnel in selected cities from the first year of occupation, when all city officials were appointed by the Military Government, to the first elections in 1946 and 1948. She finds that the local developments under US occupation facilitated economic recovery in a manner that restricted the implementation of the political and social goals of democratization. The Political Economy of Germany under Chancellors Kohl and Schröder
While unification has undoubtedly had major effects on Germany's political economy, the pattern of current policy-making preferences was established at an earlier stage, in particular, at the beginning of the 'Kohl-era' in 1982. This essentially neo-liberal pattern can be seen to have dominated the modalities chosen to guide Germany through the process of unifi cation and was mirrored in developments in other OECD countries and in particular within the EU. This book demonstrates that the three policy imperatives (neo-liberal structural reform, European monetary integration, and unification) produced a policy-mix which, together with other structural economic and demographic factors, has had disappointing results in all three areas and hampered Germany's overall economic development.

Socioeconomic Differences in Old Age Mortality
Social differences in health and mortality constitute a persistent finding in epidemiological, demographic, and sociological research. It is a topic that is much discussed in the current political debate and it is among the most urgent public health issues. However, we still do not know whether socioeconomic mortality differences increase or decrease with age. This book provides a comprehensive, critical discussion of all aspects involved in the relationship between socioeconomic status, health and mortality. It synthesizes the sociological theory of social inequality and an empirical study of mortality differences that has been conducted by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (Rostock, Germany). This study is the most comprehensive analysis of socioeconomic mortality differences in the literature, both in terms of quantity and quality of data, and in terms of the statistical method used: that of event-history modeling.
