Nordic Ceramics Industry

The cheramic sector covers very different types of products made of mostly inorganic and non-metallic materials by a firing process. This report covers the manufacture of the following product groups: Coarse ceramics: • expanded clay aggregates • vitrified clay pipes • bricks and roof tiles • refractory products Fine ceramics: • wall and floor tiles • household ceramics • sanitary ware • technical ceramics • inorganic bonded abrasives. The report was initiated by the BAT Group of the Nordic Council of Ministers and financed by the Working Group for Sustainable Consumption and Production. The results will serve as Nordic input to the EU revision of BAT conclusions for the ceramic sector under the Industrial Emissions Directive. The report also covers the Nordic ceramics manufacturing plants below the IED capacity threshold: that is, plants with an environmental permit.

Nordic Shipyards

Shipbuilding has a long tradition in all the Nordic countries. Hence, the Nordic Council of Ministers, the BAT Group under the Working Group for Sustainable Consumption and Production (also called HKP Group) awarded Vahanen Environment Oy, Finland, together with COWI AS, Denmark to prepare a Best Available Techniques (BAT) project on shipyards in the Nordic countries. The objectives of the project have been to: • review and describe the shipyard sector in the Nordic countries • review and describe the used techniques in the Nordic countries • identify and describe the Key Environmental Indicators from the Nordic perspective • identify and describe techniques that shall be included in the considerations of representing BAT in shipyards. The scope of the project has included steel ships. The main focus has been on surface treatment in relation to maintenance and repair.

Wood preservation with chemicals

The Nordic Council of Ministers, the BAT Group under the Working Group for Sustainable Consumption and Production, has requested the consultant to prepare a report on Best Available Techniques (BAT) in wood preservation with chemicals in the Nordic countries. The Nordic wood preserving industry produces around 2.1 million m³ of impregnated wood per year, which is about one third of the total supply of pressure-treated wood in Europe. This report describes the present status of the used technologies, their emissions and impacts on the environment and technologies that can be considered BAT. The report will also be used as an input from the Nordic countries to the EU process under the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) for preparation of the BAT Reference Document for preservation of wood and wood products with chemicals (WPC BREF) which is foreseen to start in 2014.
