Cybele, Attis and Related Cults
This volume brings together articles on the cult of the mother-goddess Cybele and her consort Attis, from the emergence of the religion in Anatolia through its expansion into Greece and Italy to the latest times of the Roman Empire and its farthest extent west, the Iberian Peninsula. It combines the work of established scholars with that of young researchers in the field, and represents a truly international perspective. Whereas twelfth-century pilgrims flocked to the church of St-Lazare in Autun to visit the relics of its patron saint, present-day pilgrims journey there to admire its superb sculpture, said to have been created by the artist Gislebertus whose name is inscribed above one of the church doors. Royal Ideologies in the Book of Revelation
Studies of the Apocalypse have long neglected the royal and messianic dimensions of its portrait of the Lamb. In this volume, Justin P. Jeffcoat Schedtler offers new insights on this topic, arguing that royal and messianic ideologies and discourses are not merely evident in the book of Revelation but also constitute one of its primary organizing principles. Moreover, they shape Revelation's Christology. Schedtler explores ideologies of kingship in the ancient Greek and Roman world, as well as Second Temple Judaism. Making previously unexplored connections in Revelations' ideological portrait of the Lamb, he shows that the portrayal of Jesus as God's chosen viceregent, offers new insights into several of the central Christological tenets in the text. Greek and Latin Inscriptions in the Konya Archaeological Museum
The city of Konya (ancient Iconium) has long been one of the most important Anatolian centres. In the late first century BC it was refounded as a Roman colony, and the centuries of the Roman Empire were among the most prosperous for the region. This volume provides texts and commentaries for the 231 Greek and ten Latin inscriptions now housed in the city's archaeological museum. The collection comprises 92 inscriptions from Konya itself and 149 from the surrounding region, nearly two thirds of them previously unpublished. Almost two hundred further inscriptions from Konya are listed and indexed at the end of the volume, so that for the first time there is a complete index of all people known from the ancient city of Iconium. The texts here shed an irreplaceable light on city and country society around a major centre from the early Roman to the Byzantine period, and the photographs at the end of the volume illustrate most of the characteristic inscribed monuments for the first time.
