During the 1990s, Franz West’s work moved in new and innovative stylistic directions, as his career was solidified through important international exhibitions. The focus of this publication is Franz West's (1947-2012) Kombi-Werke installations, in which greatly differing individual pieces are brought together and then recomposed into new works. Gathering elements such as fittings, furniture, sculpture, videos and works on paper from all periods--and even works made by artist friends--into grand ensembles, the Kombi-Werke are without doubt key elements in West's legacy. An example is the three-part papier-mâché sculpture "Redundanz" its starting point is the gouache "Lost Weight" (1994), with its motif of a dieting woman showing her oversized pants. Omitting the "W," West transforms "Lost Weight" into "Lost Eight," in order to derive the title for a larger work, "Where Is my Eight?" With 250 color illustrations, this substantial and inspiring volume, and the exhibition it accompanies, were overseen by the artist himself, before his death in the summer of 2012.
Vienna Actionism was the most extreme artistic project of the 1960s, mostly preceding and always surpassing the other performance art, body art and happenings in terms of sheer violent excess. This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2014. Understanding violence in the context of the contemporary world leads us to an infinite number of viewpoints and theoretical frameworks. Not only the study of violence has been largely split into specific groups, but at the same time different disciplines seem to have assumed the existence of a peaceful society in which violence occurs only in specific places and events - including armed conflicts, civil unrest and violent crime. However, it is a slippery concept that transcends unstable limits between public and private, legitimacy and illegitimacy, individual and collective spheres. Taking an interdisciplinary approach to the concept of violence in the contemporary world, we present a collection of seventeen chapters, organized in four sections: Sexualised and Intimate Partner Violence: encouraging disclosure; Urban Violence: crime and fear in the contemporary world; Representing violence: a critical analysis; Violence and Political destabilization: war, elections and corporations.
This book seeks to understand culture through the lens of scenes, analyzing them aesthetically and culturally as well as understanding them through the frameworks of gender, social networks, and artworlds. It is common to talk about the cultural and intellectual scenes of early twentieth-century Vienna, the visual art scene of postwar New York, and the music and fashion scene of the swinging London. We often think about artists and works of art as essentially belonging to a certain scene. Scenes might offer a new approach to study what is possible, what is a tradition, and/or to discuss what are the relevant units of contemporary culture for research. The book posits that scenes explain a lot about how the artworld and the cultural field function. Vivienne Westwood, Rene Magritte, Roman Jakobson, Arthur C. Danto, Susan Sontag, James Baldwin, and Didier Eribon are among the figures included in the book, which examines scenes in cities such as Moscow, Bombay, New York, London, Paris, Brussels, Helsinki, and Bratislava. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, cultural studies, philosophy, film, literature, and urban studies.
