China at the Beginning of the 21st Century

China at the beginning of the 21st century intrigues many researchers around the world. The problems discussed within this volume provide the readers with a background of most vital issues in modern China. They are related to the challenges of the Chinese society and state's international skirmishes, which is depicted by the book's division into two separate parts. While the first part provides the insight into social change, creating tremendous opportunities, and no less significant threats for the country's future development, the second part looks further and beyond borders to focus our attention on security issues.

Taiwanese-Language Cinema

Taiwanese-Language Cinema: Rediscovered and Reconsidered presents diverse approaches to the vibrant commercial film industry known as Taiwanese-language cinema (taiyupian). After a long period of neglect, films are being restored and made available with subtitles.Taiwanese-language cinema was a cycle of over 1,000 dramatic feature films produced between the mid-50s and early 70s in the local Minnanhua Chinese language most commonly spoken on the island, also known as "e;Taiwanese"e; (taiyu). The rediscovery of Taiwanese-language cinema is stimulating new scholarship, both in Chinese in Taiwan and in other languages, which challenges our conventional understandings of Taiwanese film history and opens up new approaches to the films themselves. This volume includes a mix of new English-language scholarship material with key essays by Taiwanese scholars newly translated from Chinese for the volume.

Many countries in Asia are inhabited by multi-segment societies diversified in terms of race, religion, language and economic status. They have repeatedly provided the basis for analysis of the search for consensus in the construction of a political scene that would ensure the participation in power of each group. Regardless of the chosen model, the distribution of power in multi-segment societies has always been characterized by a state of "unstable equilibrium". Practical solutions constantly evolved between consociationalism, centripetalism, federalism. In extreme cases they led to political disintegration of states or to permanent domination of one of the segments, most often based on authoritarian solutions. In this volume, a group of scholars specializing in countries of the region try to point out the dynamics of the "unstable equilibrium" of power sharing in particular Asian countries and analyze the trends occurring in them in the 21st century.

Canada as a selective power. Canada’s Role and International Position after 1989

The academic study of Canada has traditionally been the realm of Canadian scholars. For this reason it is easy for outsiders to view Canada as a semi-Nordic continental utopia existing peacefully under a benign government that seeks only peace and harmony in the world. The reality is a more complicated story. That is the strength of this outstanding new book written by two young Polish scholars specializing in Canadian affairs. They have put together an impressively researched monograph that combines a detailed analysis outlining a rather basic premise: The world has changed dramatically since 1989 - and Canada has changed with it. In this well argued narrative they argue that in recent year...

Meandering in Transition

This edited collection addresses the dynamics of the post-Communist transition in Central Eastern Europe. Its contributors present a detailed analysis of the events unfolding during the last three decades in the region, focusing in particular on identity-building processes and reforms in Belarus, Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Ukraine. The contributors outline reasons why some of these states accomplished a decisive break with the Communist past and became members of European and transatlantic structures, while some opted for pseudo-transition and fostered hybrid political regimes, jeopardizing their genuine integration with th...

Przewodnik po konstytucji Kanady. Cz. 1, Akt Konstytucyjny z 1867 roku

Część pierwsza Przewodnika po konstytucji Kanady omawia w syntetyczny sposób Akt Konstytucyjny z 1867 r. Ten liczący niemal 150 lat pierwszy z dwóch podstawowych dokumentów pisanej konstytucji Kanady zawiera podstawy ustrojowe tego państwa. Ich zrozumienie jest bardzo trudne bez znajomości kontekstu historycznego, zapisów innych aktów prawnych, a przede wszystkim bez uwzględnienia wpływu niepisanych elementów o charakterze konstytucyjnym, zwłaszcza konwenansów konstytucyjnych. W istotny sposób modyfikują one, a w niektórych przypadkach całkowicie wręcz zmieniają znaczenie zapisów powstałych w XIX wieku.

Each organism has its own internal biological clock, which is reset by environmental cues (Zeitgebers), thus keeping it synchronized with the external environment. It is a chemically based oscillating system within cells, relying on molecular feedback loops. Circadian biological clocks exist in most organisms. What is so special about the clock in f
