This chronologically arranged collection of essays explores the concept of exile, from the literal to the metaphorical, in Western literary works, such as those of Hrothswitha of Gandersheim, Dante, Unamuno, Heinrich Boell, and Irish and Latin American contemporary writers.
The volume explores how Greek and Latin authors perceive and present their own (real or metaphorical) exile and employ exile as a powerful trope to express estrangement, elicit readerly sympathy, and question political power structures.

Exile is usually defined as the time one lives elsewhere, involuntarily separated from home. However, exile can also be conceptualized more broadly as a process already starting at home, while traveling into exile and/or before arriving in the place of exile. These are the early stages of exile. They include the sense of alienation at home for political, racist, religious, cultural or linguistic reasons, also for reasons of sexual orientation or censorship.
