Clinical Nuclear Medicine

This work has true international scope, being a unique European/American joint venture that focuses on the state of the art in both diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclide methodology. Pertinent clinical applications are emphasized rather than attempting to cover everything included in the several large comprehensive texts available in our field. This "practical" approach should make it an essential guide to nuclear medicine physicians, technologists, students and interested clinicians alike.

Progress in Radiopharmacy

This book is a compilation of the invited papers, which were presented at the Fourth European Symposium on Radiopharmacy and Radiopharmaceuticals, which was held in Baden, Switz- land, 1-4 May, 1991. The First and Third Symposia on Radiopharmacy and Radiopharmaceuticals (Elsinore, Denmark, 1983, 1987) concentrated on the safety and efficacy of radiopharmaceuticals, whereas this Fourth Symposium to some extent followed up the subject of the Second Symposium (Cambridge, UK, 1985): recent developments in radiopharmacy and current research on radiopharmaceuticals. The symposium was organized by the Radiopharmacy Group of the Swiss Society of Medical Radiology (Section Nuclear Medicine) under the...

The aim of this series is to provide authoritative reviews in the rapidly expanding area of bioinorganic chemistry. The series will present "state of the art" reviews covering the whole field of bioinorganic chemistry. The present volume is the fourth in the series and covers the topics: lithium in biology, the structure and function of ceroplasmin, rhenium complexes in nuclear medicine, the anti-HIV activity of macrocyclic polyamines and their metal complexes for dinuclear phosphoesterase enzymes.

This book provides detailed information on therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals and discusses emerging technologies which have potential for broad clinical implementation. Recent advances in molecular biology, radiopharmaceutical chemistry and radioisotope production have stimulated a new era for the use of radiopharmaceuticals for targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT). Emerging clinical trials include use of peptides and monoclonal antibodies radiolabeled with therapeutic radionuclides for cancer therapy. In addition, small molecules are used for the treatment of chronic diseases such as metastatic bone pain palliation and radiation synovectomy of inflammatory joints. In the interventional arena,...

Testing on animals has become standard practice for evaluating the potential efficacy of therapeutic or diagnostic agents. Not only are the overhead costs of such testing extremely high, but subjecting substantial numbers of animals to intensive testing and re-testing raises serious ethical questions and is widely unpopular with the public. This study explores the advantages of combining various analytical methods with mathematical and computer modeling to construct a multifaceted tool for the pre-vivo screening of prospective radiopharmaceuticals. The benefits of such a method lie in cost minimization and the avoidance of the ethical dimension. The 117mSn radionuclide was identified as an ideal pharmacological component for the treatment of bone pain, and two tin-bisphosponate complexes - Sn(II)-APDDMP and Sn(IV)-PEI-MP were chosen for evaluation. This book describes how these complexes were studied using various techniques.

Handbook of Nuclear Chemistry

Impressive in its overall size and scope, this five-volume reference work provides researchers with the tools to push them into the forefront of the latest research. The Handbook covers all of the chemical aspects of nuclear science starting from the physical basics and including such diverse areas as the chemistry of transactinides and exotic atoms as well as radioactive waste management and radiopharmaceutical chemistry relevant to nuclear medicine. The nuclear methods of the investigation of chemical structure also receive ample space and attention. The international team of authors consists of 77 world-renowned experts - nuclear chemists, radiopharmaceutical chemists and physicists - from Austria, Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Holland, Japan, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. The Handbook is an invaluable reference for nuclear scientists, biologists, chemists, physicists, physicians practicing nuclear medicine, graduate students and teachers - virtually all who are involved in the chemical and radiopharmaceutical aspects of nuclear science. The Handbook also provides for further reading through its rich selection of references.

The recent revolution in molecular biology offers exciting new opportunities for targeted radionuclide therapy. This up-to-date, comprehensive book, written by world-renowned experts, discusses the basic principles of radionuclide therapy, explores in detail the available treatments, explains the regulatory requirements, and examines likely future developments. The full range of clinical applications is considered, including thyroid cancer, hematological malignancies, brain tumors, liver cancer, bone and joint disease, and neuroendocrine tumors. The combination of theoretical background and practical information will provide the reader with all the knowledge required to administer radionuclide therapy safely and effectively in the individual patient. Careful attention is also paid to the role of the therapeutic nuclear physician in coordinating a diverse multidisciplinary team, which is central to the safe provision of treatment.
