Aqueous-Phase Organometallic Catalysis

Now in its second completely revised and expanded edition. Written by the renowned editors B. Cornils and W. A. Herrmann, this book presents every important aspect of aqueous-phase organometallic catalysis, a method which saves time, waste and money. The large-scale application of this "green" technology in chemical industry clearly underlines its practical use outside of academia. New chapters (for example "Organic Chemistry in Water"), 20% more content and fully updated contributions from a plethora of international authors make this book a "must-have" for everyone working in this field. From the reviews of the first edition: "This overview will be extremely useful for everyone active in this field [...]" Angewandte Chemie "This book is an essential in any chemical research library and I strongly recommend it to all synthetic research and teaching chemists. [...]" The Alchemist "The editors are to be congratulated on assembling such a wide range of contributors who have described the industrial as well as the academic aspects of the subject." Students contemplating careers in chemistry, whether in research, practice, or academia, obviously need a solid grounding in proper research methodology, reasoning, and analysis. However, there are few resources available that efficiently and effectively introduce these concepts and techniques and inspire students to undertake advanced research, particularly in the area of catalysis. Catalysis: Principles and Applications evolved out of a special, resoundingly successful short course for graduate students interested in catalysis. It covers nearly the entire gamut of the subject, from its fundamentals to its modern, applied aspects. The chapters were contributed by catalysis specialists from ...

Updating the original, Transforms and Applications Handbook, Third Edition solidifies its place as the complete resource on those mathematical transforms most frequently used by engineers, scientists, and mathematicians. Highlighting the use of transforms and their properties, this latest edition of the bestseller begins with a solid introduction to signals and systems, including properties of the delta function and some classical orthogonal functions. It then goes on to detail different transforms, including lapped, Mellin, wavelet, and Hartley varieties. Written by top experts, each chapter provides numerous examples and applications that clearly demonstrate the unique purpose and properti...

Green Biocatalysis

Green Biocatalysis presents an exciting green technology that uses mild and safe processes with high regioselectivity and enantioselectivity. Bioprocesses are carried out under ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure in aqueous conditions that do not require any protection and deprotection steps to shorten the synthetic process, offering waste prevention and using renewable resources. Drawing on the knowledge of over 70 internationally renowned experts in the field of biotechnology, Green Biocatalysis discusses a variety of case studies with emphases on process R&D and scale-up of enzymatic processes to catalyze different types of reactions. Random and directed evolution under process c...

The Category of $H$-Modules over a Spectrum

The category of H-modules over a ring spectrum is introduced. We prove that mapping cones can be constructed in the category and that these mapping cones are unique up to equivalence. Other H-modules are constructed by induction and a limit process. We prove that each of the classical Thom spectra MO, MSO, MU, MSU, and MSp is a convergent H-module over itself. Finally we construct a tower of homology theories and natural transformations from MU.

Heme Oxygenase

Heme oxygenase is an enzyme which breaks down heme, the iron-containing oxygen-carrying constituent of the red blood cells. Heme must be synthesised and degraded within an individual nucleated cell, as heme is essential for the maintenance of cellular homeostasis by sensing or using oxygen. Physiological heme degradation is catalysed by the two functional isozymes of heme oxygenase, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and HO-2, yielding CO, iron, and biliverdin IX N. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), has potent anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-proliferative effects, is up-regulated by multiple stimuli and provides protection against oxidative stress. HO-1 also plays an important role in the regulation of cardiovascular function and is involved in many other diseases such as sickle cell disease. This new book brings together leading research from around the world in this field.

The theory of interpolation spaces has its origin in the classical work of Riesz and Marcinkiewicz but had its first flowering in the years around 1960 with the pioneering work of Aronszajn, Calderón, Gagliardo, Krein, Lions and a few others. It is interesting to note that what originally triggered off this avalanche were concrete problems in the theory of elliptic boundary value problems related to the scale of Sobolev spaces. Later on, applications were found in many other areas of mathematics: harmonic analysis, approximation theory, theoretical numerical analysis, geometry of Banach spaces, nonlinear functional analysis, etc. Besides this the theory has a considerable internal beauty an...
