Essa nova formação discursiva, tanto causa como efeito da multiplicação de abordagens, "não é um conjunto de métodos para o estudo literário, mas um grupo ilimitado de textos sobre tudo o que existe sob a face da terra, dos problemas mais técnicos de filosofia acadêmica até os modos mutáveis nos quais se fala e se pensa sobre o corpo" (Culler). Teoria (literária) americana discute criticamente as promessas e os becos sem saída a que a Teoria leva, o debate que em torno dela se formou, a sua relação com a universidade nos EUA, e suas implicações para os estudos literários no Brasil.
